وجاريةٍ في مَجاري الحياةِ

وجاريةٍ في مَجاري الحياةِ

خلعت عليها رداء الشبابِ

خلعت عليها رداء الشبابِ

And a maiden in the channels of life,

A maiden in life’s streams

I draped her in the robe of youth,

I clothed her in youth’s robe

وحَلَّيتُها حِليةَ المشرف

وحَلَّيتُها حِليةَ المشرف

ىّ فوق حمائِلهِ والقراب

ىّ فوق حمائِلهِ والقراب

And adorned her with the adornment of a Mashrafi sword,

And adorned her with honor’s jewelry

Above its baldrics and scabbard.

Above her camel litters and mounts

إذا غادةٌ مَنعتْوطأَها

إذا غادةٌ مَنعتْوطأَها

تبطَّنتُ منها ذلولَ الركابِ

تبطَّنتُ منها ذلولَ الركابِ

When a fair maiden refused to be mounted,

If she walked her gait forbid tread near

I rode her as a docile mount,

I took from her the suppleness of feet

وخرَّقَ ما تحته ظهرَها

وخرَّقَ ما تحته ظهرَها

كما تَخرقُ الشمسُ ثوبَ السحابِ

كما تَخرقُ الشمسُ ثوبَ السحابِ

And what lay beneath it tore open her back,

And her back rent what was under it

As the sun tears through the robe of clouds.

As the sun rends the dress of clouds

وأحمدُ من جسمها أنه

وأحمدُ من جسمها أنه

كريمُ العظام لئيمُ الإهابِ

كريمُ العظام لئيمُ الإهابِ

And I praise this in her body: it is

And I praise her body that it

Noble of bone, base of hide.

Has generous bones, cowardly flesh
