وحاملةٍand a bearer لكfor you محمولةٍherself carried
وحاملةٍ لك محمولةٍ
علىupon ظهرِthe back of محتقِرٍone who scorns ثِقلَهاher weight
على ظهرِ محتقِرٍ ثِقلَها
And one that carries you, herself carried,
Upon the back of one who scorns her weight.
تضيقُfall short بنانُكyour fingers عنof بعضهاpart of her
تضيقُ بنانُك عن بعضها
حساباًin reckoning وتحسبُهاand you reckon her كلَّهاall of her
حساباً وتحسبُها كلَّها
Your fingers fall short of even part of her
In reckoning, yet you reckon her whole.
إذاif عونقتْshe is embraced مَنعتْshe withholds وصلَهاher union
إذا عونقتْ مَنعتْ وصلَها
وإنand if صورمتْshe is cut off وصلَتshe joins حبلَهاher cord
وإن صورمتْ وصلَت حبلَها
If embraced, she withholds her union;
And if cut off, she joins her cord.
وأسمنهاand fattened her ربُّهاher lord فيin السماءِthe sky
وأسمنها ربُّها في السماءِ
قديماlong ago ولكنهbut he استلَّهاdrew her out
قديما ولكنه استلَّها
And her lord fattened her in the sky
Long ago, but he drew her out.
إذاwhen لقِحتْshe conceives بالظُّباby the blades أُكرمتْshe is honored
إذا لقِحتْ بالظُّبا أُكرمتْ
نِتاجاًoffspring وماand not طارقتshe mated with فحلَهاher breeding male
نِتاجاً وما طارقت فحلَها
When impregnated by blades, she is prized
For her offspring, though she has not mated with her male.
ولايدركand does not obtain الحظَّthe share منهاfrom her امرؤٌa man
ولايدرك الحظَّ منها امرؤٌ
إذاif لمnot يكنis رأسُهاher head رجلَهاher foot
إذا لم يكن رأسُها رجلَها
And no man gains a share from her
Unless her head is her foot.
