I am deceived by my hopes, as though sincerely advised.
I delude myself with hopes, as if I were being sincere,
I live on to suffer through living, yet I rejoice.
Yet I remain the most wretched by staying alive and happy,

I yearn for a bright face of time,
And I yearn for the cheerful, smiling face of fate,
smiling, while my face beneath its veil is grim.
While my own face is stained with tears.

I delight in the reprieve of a day and a night,
I allow one day and night to dictate to me,
though death is only an evening visitor or a morning visitor.
Yet death is nothing but a sudden disaster or a fading lantern.

I have delayed my debt, though the creditor is resolute;
I procrastinate with my debts while my creditor is intent,
I have cherished good expectations, while the wrongdoer speaks openly.
And I think well of myself while the evildoer confesses.

The fates draw the blood of people around me, yet it is only
Deaths take people around me while my blood
my blood that spatters their clothes.
Is what stains their clothes as it trickles out.

I take comfort when I see my skin smooth,
And I feel tranquil when my skin appears smooth,
but what health is there in skin when the heart is wounded?
Yet good health is not in the skin when the heart is slashed.

When death passes, searching out who shall perish,
When the terminator of lives passes by to take souls,
swaying among its children and tipping the balance,
He leans toward his children and prefers them.

I stoop down, hoping to elude its glances
I pretended to escape his glance,
and remain hidden—but death's blue eye catches sight.
But the blue eye of death still sees me.

The night of youth deceived me—where has it led me
My night of youth has led me astray, so where am I?
astray, while the dawn of gray hair rises bare?
And the dawn of old age arrives, bare and shining.

Nothing is nearer to a bough than its drying up
The closest thing to a dead stick whose leaves
when its green leaves keep withering.
Have dried and peeled is me.

The young became infatuated with life, and it betrayed them;
The slender tree trunks have been orphaned and betrayed,
why, then, do I hope for its affection as I depart?
So why should I hope for their friendship as I depart?

Once a hopeful span of it lay before me;
There used to be an expanse of hope ahead of me,
today it lies behind me, cast aside.
Now it is tossed behind me and discarded.

I swallowed time's bitterness out of love for its sweetness;
I have tasted the bitterness of fate desiring its sweetness,
sometimes it pours me clear drink, sometimes a morning draught.
So it clears itself for me at times and at others becomes muddy.

If it favors me with one companion, it steals another;
When a companion praises another companion with verse in my presence,
at times I sing with my poetry, at times I lament.
I sing with my own poetry at times and gesture at others.

I surrender faces to the dust—once what angered me
I allow the dust to cover faces that used to anger me
against the sun was their wan, scorched look.
When the piercing arrow of the sun hits them.

I stir it with my hands or dig a hole
whose soil is heaped and shoveled upon my heart.
Where the soil covers my heart and buries it.

You see the truth abandoned and spend the night fascinated
as this shimmering mirage dances with them.
As this mirage dances for you.

A young man wishes the whole earth were his home,
The youth wishes the plain was his home
and all upon it were wealth brought home to him.
With money on top of it to lavish.

Yet a belly's capacity is the most he can hold,
Capacious is the belly of one whose gains are hardly sufficient,
and a place to lay his side is all the space he can claim.
While the side of one who strains has scarcely room to breathe.

The world sells us wishes in exchange for our souls,
We bargained the world for our souls,
shortchanging us fraudulently, while its trading partner deals fairly.
Yet it cheats us while the bargainer profits.

Nor is it content with the excess of what it gains.

Why, O world, when you are but pus
and we are famished—you withhold while we give freely?
While we are lesions, do you withhold while we give?

Will you not knock on a breast the night does not fill,
nor does she avoid a crier when she comes at dawn.
And will you not avoid screaming in the morning?

Penetrating everywhere, no mountain protects where she climbs,
Stirring up without a dam to protect from your rising,
nor is any valley a refuge where she descends.
Nor a harbor where you descend.

With no fire lighting nor dog barking.

You have, from towns you cultivated and chose,
cushions spread out, or choice beasts slaughtered.
Desolate places you trod upon or plateau you slaughtered.

You have struck the shrine of glory where it belongs
and lowered excellence's gaze where it aspired.
And have deceived the eye of virtue where you aim.

And you have descended, speeding from Muhammad
against the flank of a pillar never before butted.
Next to a corner that was not trampled before.

Upright through the grinding of calamities—what ails him,
Upright yet crowded with hardships so it is no wonder
that, jostled by one blow, he reels?
He is crammed with a crowd jostling around.

Asking, from any stab dripping on the back of perfection:

"By what bond is the brave one tied down and subdued?"

And words, though no voice penetrates the soil to him
to reach him, and no lucid speaker understands the earth's echo—
Nor does the land's echo understand and explain.

Abu Hasan, as for hope, it has failed;
Abu Hassan, as for hope, it has perished,
but the hope in what proclaimed your death has succeeded.
Yet the hoped for from you, in what you represent, is attained.

I bore calamities, first distraught, then patient;
I have endured adversities, first defiant, then patient
even so, the beauty of patience turns ugly after you.
For patience after you is seemly.

And I maintained ties with those I loved, then lost,
but no affliction comes without your loss being worse.
So I do not settle in a new place except missing you.

I remembered you when the wine cup was passed around and no advisor

Advised, nor did a tongue speak words explaining.

No devoted love sincerely swore by him
its wearer kneeling and boasting of his glory.
Kneeling proudly while his Lord watched.

a night whose length makes you think you will never see morning.
In a night where your height shows no dawn comes to you.

questioning lightning's repeated flashes as they gleam.
Snatched by the flashing lightning as it waves.

He read the omens of ill-omened birds passing to his left
It was delighted by doves spending the night
at your loss, though once they passed auspiciously on his right.
Saddened by your loss - before they were joyous Miamis.

So it spent the night while the land's expanse was its supplies
wretched in what he sniffed or inhaled,
Miserable in being satiated or sniffing the air.

In a night of misery whose darkness overwhelmed towns
as it lacked you, its worshipper and giver of praise.
Just as being without you overwhelmed the praying supplicator.

For the matter, you were the fearless lion, whether protecting it,
now yelping foxes howl together, grasping at it.
Else crafty foxes cooperate to divide it.

And the breach you used to mend spilled forth.

And the inability to compete was unleashed and equal
in ignorance stood the herd, grazing or sent to graze.
To ignorance, whether passing freely or settled.

they showed themselves to glory and put themselves forward,
Then they pretended to high morals and aspired to lofty positions.

They did not crowd together until after you the specks

Were cleaned from the water, yet they drink it and get inflamed.

I turned away from brothers, hoping
You enriched me with love and support when needy.
that death would spare you alone for my sake.
From today, I no longer covet or implore.
وأغنيتنيand you enriched me ودّاًin affection ورفداًand gifts بحاجةٍwith a need
منfrom اليومtoday ماnot أرتادُI seek out أوor أتمنَّحُask for a gift
You enriched me with love and gifts, meeting a need
I make excuses for myself because of you, that if
for which today I neither search nor beg a grant.
One fallen ill recovers a bit or the dawn breaks.
أعلّلI console نفسيmyself عنكfor you لوif only أنthat مُسقَماًan ailing man
يُفيقcould recover بنوعٍthrough a kind منof جوىًheartache أوor يُصبَّحُbe given a morning draught
I seek to soothe myself for you—if only an ailing man
And I mend my days hoping to fix them
could revive through a kind of heartache, or receive it as his morning draught.
When the life you bettered is corrupt.
وأرقَعُand I patch أيّاميmy days أرومseeking صلاحَهاtheir repair
وقدthough already فسدwas ruined العيشُthe life الذيwhich كنتyou used to تُصلِحُmend
I patch my days, seeking to mend them,
I asked the days about you hoping for gladness
though the life you used to set right has gone to ruin.
Yet when they refused except being arduous.
سألتُI petitioned بكthrough you الأيّامthe days أرجوhoping for مسرّةًjoy
فلماbut when أَبتthey refused إلاexcept التيthat which هيit أترحُmore grievous
I petitioned the days through you, hoping for joy;
I laughed at your obituary writer thinking
but when they refused anything except what brought worse grief,
He exaggerated to commemorate your day playfully.
ضحكتُI laughed إلىat ناعيكthe bearer of your death أحسبthinking أنهthat he
وقدalthough he جَدَّwas earnest إكباراًout of awe ليومكfor your day يمزحُjests
I laughed at the bearer of your death, thinking he,
The quarter of my companionship has not diminished
though earnest, was joking—such was my awe of your day.
And no home remains in my heart vacant for you.
عفاvanished ربعُthe abode of أنسيmy joy منكfrom you ضيقاًنnarrow (unclear form) وماbut not عفاvanished
بساحةِin the court of قلبيmy heart منزلٌa dwelling لكfor you أفيحُspacious
The narrow abode of my joy in you has vanished, but not
One who inhabited it, from your good days, dwells,
the spacious dwelling you have in the court of my heart.
Comforting the stranger of sadness wherever it roams.
بهin it ساكنٌa resident منfrom طيبِthe sweetness of عهدكyour days عامرٌabiding

يُريحbrings home at evening عَزيبَthe wandering herd of الحُزنgrief منfrom حيثwhere يَسرحُit roams
There dwells an abiding presence from the sweetness of your days;
When an ember of patience dies down there
it brings grief's stray herd home from wherever it roams.
A spark of remembrance ignites and burns.
إذاwhen ذبَلَتfades فيهwithin it علىunder الصبرpatience جمرةٌan ember
خموداًtoward extinction ورَىkindles زندٌa fire-stick منof الذِّكرremembrance يَقدَحُstriking sparks
When an ember there fades through patience
And that moist tongue still remains in my mouth
toward extinction, a fire-stick of remembrance strikes sparks.
Which once praised the like of you and today laments you.
وذاكand that اللسانُtongue الرَّطبُmoist لاmay not زالdepart فيfrom فميmy mouth
هوit اليومَtoday يرثِيlaments مثلَهas it did أمسِyesterday يَمدحُpraising
And that moist tongue—may it remain in my mouth—
It says, though not replacing you, that you filled
laments today as it praised yesterday.
A vessel of bounty which now pours forth.

ملأتَyou filled إناءًa vessel نعمةًwith bounty فهوso it يرشحُseeps
It speaks, though it cannot avail you; it is only that
And if death had been repelled from me by poetry
you filled a vessel with bounty, and now it seeps.
Or if my worn-out teeth had some life or an eloquent one lived,
ولوand if رُدَّhad been repelled قبليbefore me الموتُdeath بالشِّعرby poetry أوor مضىhad prevailed

Had death ever been repelled by poetry before me, or had there prevailed
He would have escaped by glory to other than his people
the edge of a fluent tongue, or an eloquent man lived on through time,
While the estranged outcast is shunned.
نجاwould have survived لائذاًseeking refuge بالعزّin honor فيamong غيرother than قومهhis people
وقدand already سبقhad surpassed الناسَpeople الغريبُthe stranger المقرَّحُcovered in sores
one seeking refuge in honor among a people not his own would have survived—
And the asylum of An-Numan from his tyranny
the sore-covered stranger who had surpassed all men;
Is in carefully selecting his justification and refining it.
ومستنزلُand the one who brought down النعمانal-Nu'man عنfrom سطواتهhis assaults
بماby what يَنتقِيhe selected منof عِذرةٍan apology وينقِّحُand refined
and he who brought al-Nu'man down from his assaults
And Urwah did not heed the corruptors of his companion
by the apologies he selected and refined.
Nor was esteem given among Qais to the flattering sycophant.
وعُروةُand Urwa لمnot يُصغِheeded الردىdeath لنسيبهhis love poetry
ولمand not يُعطَwas granted فيconcerning قَيسٍQays مناهhis wish الملوَّحُal-Mulawwah
And Urwa—death did not heed his love poetry,
And Ghilan Al-Muhari changed his intentional mistake,
nor was al-Mulawwah granted his wish concerning Qays.
Yet the she-camel saddle did not save him from death's termination.
وغيّرand exchanged غيلانُGhaylan المهاريthe Mahri camels بعَنسِهِfor his sturdy she-camel

فلمbut not تُنجهsaved him منfrom عَدوةِthe onrush of الموتِdeath صَيدَحُSaydah
Ghaylan exchanged the Mahri camels for his sturdy she-camel,
But it is the obligation of loyalty and a worry
but Saydah did not save him from death's onrush.
That troubles the heart to extract it.
ولكنهbut it شَرطُis the bond of الوفاءloyalty وغمّةٌand a gloom
علىupon الصدرthe breast باستخراجهاby releasing it أتروَّحُI find relief
Yet this is the bond of loyalty, and a gloom
I blamed my heart for you while grief burns it
upon my breast whose release lets me breathe.
And I rebuked the eyelid while tears wound it.
ذممتُI reproached فؤاديmy heart فيكover you والحزنُwhile grief محرقٌis burning
وعاتبتُand I chided جفنَthe lid of العينthe eye والدمعُwhile tears مُقرِحُcause sores
I reproached my heart for you, though grief was burning,
No wonder the tears' dignity declined
and chided my eyelid, though tears were wearing it raw.
For it does not gather unless spilt out for you.
وماand no عجبٌwonder للدمعfor tears أنthat ذَلَّyielded عزُّهtheir proud strength
فماfor not جَمّwelled abundantly إلاexcept أنهthat it لكfor you يُنزحُis drained
It is no wonder that tears' proud strength yielded,
And I swear none matched you in what a heart
for they welled up only to be drained for you.
Contains of simmering sorrows and words prolonged in lament.
وأُقسمُand I swear ماnot جازاكrepaid you قلبٌa heart بماwith what طوَىit concealed
غليلاًanguish ولاnor قولٌspeech يطولُgrows long فنشرحُand we expound
I swear: no heart has repaid you with what it held
Nor was it legally ordained that I would see
of anguish, nor speech we prolong and expound.
Dust on you inparity while my body tranquil.
ولاnor كانwas فيwithin حكمthe terms of الوثيقةthe pledge أنthat أرىI see

عليكupon you الثرىthe soil كَلاًّa burden وجسمِيَwhile my body رَيِّحُis at ease
Nor was it in the terms of our pledge that I should see
I am but one refraining from merit.
earth weighing upon you while my body rests at ease.
If I incline toward it crookedly, I stumble.

إذاwhen قمتُI rise فيهاto it مائلاًswaying أترنَّحُI stagger
I am only one who falls short of a virtue
Your drinker, though the earth enjoys you,
and, when I rise to it, sways and staggers.
Returns from the clouds returning to life and contentment.

May you be watered—though the soil, with you, has no need
A carrier of sweet water, floating toward it
of clouds—by a rain-cloud coming at dawn and returning at evening,
While the open mouths of the empty buckets overflow.

laden with cloud-water, beneath whose downpour there rise
When it weakens or its sharpness dulls
the valleys' gaping mouths, filling to overflow.
The aqueducts of the water wheels are equipped with buckets.

If it flags in weakness or lags, it is urged onward
The wind's banishment makes them creak as if they are
by heavy, laden clouds of the two Simaks' rain-season.
Ships gaining speed or message pouch dove wings flapping.

The driving wind sends them rushing, as though they were
Courageous as you or a steed in its water,
sailing ships or swift, leaning she-camels,
If neglect afflicts it, my eyes pour down.

فإنbut if عاقهhinders it ضنٌّstinginess فعينيَthen my eye تَسفَحُpours forth
brave like you, or generous with its water;
So a grave in Medina may know I am
if stinginess hinders it, my eye will pour forth,
One who fulfills rain or one who ration rain.

منthan الغيثِthe rain أَوْفَىmore faithful أوor منthan الغيثِthe rain أَسمَحُmore generous
so that a grave in the city may know that I
am more faithful than the rain, or more generous than the rain.
