And a son in whom I rejoiced when I was told, “A boy!”

So I guarded him, as pearls are guarded in their shells.

I fear the winds might blow upon him, so you do not

see him anywhere but in my lap or on my shoulder.

In my admiration of him, I am jealous even of kissing him

one day, though kissing him brings me nearer to honor.

He struts atop a chair I was given for him

by al-Husayn, his figure standing straight as the letter alif.

Like a sword its owner loosed amid the terror of battle

against the densely massed battalion, without halting.

    I hid him while his form was not yet hidden;

and here he is now: I have not hidden him, yet he is hidden.
