ظنِّي فكثَّرتً عديدَ العدا
With you I was many, in the eyes
I used to talk much about you from my perspective
of my fancy; yet you swelled the ranks of my foes.
So I multiplied your many enemies

do not send darkness when seeking guidance.
Do not send an oppressor to be guided

one who betrays has no right to make a pledge.
It is not right for a traitor to make a pact

Another, not I, is many-colored in his love:
Another than I, Abu Al-Alwan, complains of love
he laments love today and grows indifferent tomorrow.
Lamenting passion today and tomorrow as well

After you they kept me awake and tearful

Oh longing for one who took shelter

my heart—and the heart follows what it is taught.
Though the heart was not disciplined

So I encountered tyranny, shunned

Stranger than the repeated assaults of misfortunes
Wonders stranger than I hate
is that I complain of them and am envied.
That I complain of them, and envy

In the horizon rivals the full moon?
