أم طاب أن صاب روضاتِ اللّوى المطرُ
Does the east wind carry any news from Rama?
Do the winds of dawn have news of a gazelle grazing,
Or has it grown fragrant because rain fell on al-Liwa's meadows?
Or is the rain's watering of the gardens of passion pleasing?

A sign from Umm al-Walid has come to you,
A sign for you from Umm al-Walid has come
lifted by the winds as rainclouds descend.
The winds bear it and the clouds pour down.

As though the fragrant breeze were her saffron-dyed garments,
As if the fragrance it diffused from its bedouin encampments
shaken out, and the lightning her white, serrated teeth.
Was overflowing, as if lightning flashed from its clouds.

A love the days have cast far away, distancing it,
Passion which the days have tossed far away
yet signs and memories have brought it near to you.
Yet the signs and mention have brought near to you.

And a dweller at al-Liwa, whose image you forget through
Descending upon passion, its image consoles you
the road's bewilderment, and whose name caution makes you forget.
Though losing the way, its name makes you forget caution.

It traveled east yearning, no eye was lost
his presence at the winding sands of Khabt, nor of his trace.
In passionate love nor any trace or footstep.

ويلبَسُ الليلَ زوَّاراً فيعتكرُ
He makes the full moon suffer at the sight of him,
The full moon complains of seeing it
and dons the night on his visits, so it grows dense.
And darkness clothes itself in visitors and thickens.

He would not have settled in the deserts were he not a gazelle,
The full moon would not have inhabited the deserts
nor ridden the night were he not a moon.
If it were not a crescent, nor mounted the night if it were not a moon.

O boon of sleep! Were it not for its sweetness,
A kindness to creation, if not for its sweetness
sleeplessness, though faithfulness in love, would never be blamed.
It would not have been blamed though it is faithful in passionate vigil.

Through it, darkness stretched forth before morning a hand
Darkness stretched out a white hand before dawn
of white light, by which daybreak stood apart from its yesterday.
At daybreak, sorcery appeared from its predawn ink.

Among those pitching camp in al-Balqa as nomads,
Among those raiding the steppe are signs
town life enslaves its own freeborn sons for her.
The heat seizes for it some urban youth.

Tales of her stir longing, though she is far away,
Stories about her circulate while she departs
and hearing clings to what sight does not.
And hearing clings to what sight cannot cling to.

A dusky woman: jealous for her, though resembling her
A brown woman attacked her, resembling her
in stature and hue, the brown spears protect her.
In stature and color, protected by a reddish tent.

Her form is soft, her nature harsh, as though
She is gentle in nature though her nature is coarse
her stone heart had been cast into her body of water.
As if in her body water were cast but her heart remained stone.

A Sa'di woman, claiming that faithfulness for her
A happy Sa'diya claims that loyalty to her
is a cord from Hajib's loins, never severed.
Is an unsevered rope from the side of an eyebrow.

Yet what can she do while my heart is under her spell
yet longing grazes upon it unjustly, and it finds no redress?
And yearning tends it unjustly with no victor?

What did Umm Khayr reject as she turned away?
Umm Khayr did not deny when she was aloof
Anything but the vicissitudes that have colored my locks?
That my change of color was from dyeing, not real.

لا يُحلَقُ الحبُّ حتى يُحلَقَ الشَّعَرُ
Youth kept faith with love, since it had sworn a pact with it:
Dawn was faithful to passion since it was its ally—
love is not shorn away until the hair is shorn.
Love is not shed until hair is shed.

I see wishes still dictating their old tales to me,
I now see wishes reciting their night tales to me
though the gray hair I have met contains a warning.
While I have greeted old age seeking to deter me.

My first desires pull me
toward following reason by my later desires.
And the latter bid me follow restraint.

How noble forbearance is, were its burden not so heavy,
How honorable is determination but for the burden of its load,
and how lovely silence, were it not called speechlessness!
How beautiful is silence but for their saying it is confinement.

How mighty is the youth in the shade of his chastity
if prudence were consulted, or thoughts were sound!
If resolve were consulted or reason was sound.

Greed brings you nothing but an increase of its abasement,
You have no excellence in greed but the baseness of its humiliation
while destiny does with sustenance whatever it wishes.
As fate does with sustenance what it desires.

This world has two dispositions: it is difficult
Two natures in this world are difficult to marry
whenever sought, but offers ease if left alone.
Not sought, though if you leave them, ease comes.

I am content with what wets my parched throat, out of a greatness
I am content in it with what expands my breast
of ambition that some have mistaken for littleness.
Some thought my ambition small though it was great.

I put off life, patching up my hopeful trust
If I praise, it is pride with which I find no fault
amid decay, though the repair of hope lies broken.
And the experts' reports do not deny my accounts.

Patching with wishes, I hope for tomorrow, then tomorrow;
If in speech I exaggerate what does not lead me
fortunes arrive, while mine is still awaited.
Back to manliness, I apologize for what I say.

Contentment with myself, or the friendship of a trustworthy man—
Tell of the Bani ‘Abd al-Rahim’s merit—they were few
through it I am rich, while the man rich in money is needy.
In the world’s days though the early pages bear witness to what was transmitted of them, which histories and biographies did not recount.

Though absent from office, they sufficed and attended.

They are the peak of the pillar of this kingdom, spreading out
apologizing to honor for what I have said.
Its lofty branches, seeking the star though it did not decline.

They possessed the kinship of the world and its law
noble they have been through the world's long ages, and how numerous.
Such that people follow whatever they promulgate.

Events do not belittle them if they approach
about them, and what relics and chronicles recount.
Caprice, nor does good fortune make them domineering.

without testimony, and who meet all needs when present.
They give thanks or endure.

Sons of this kingdom's summit, they have scaled
They speak and the spokesmen walk humbly for them
its hump, seeking the stars, never descending.
They do not command nor are disobeyed if they command.

They command the world's waterward approach and its watering-place;
In the years of droughts they are called
people come to water only after they have departed.
And do to them what rain does.

Events, when they strike, do not unsettle them
The Euphrates ebbed and the clouds held back
from sound judgment, nor does arrogant delight make them transgress.
Then flowed in the clouds, their hands squeezing them until they dripped.

If you test their piety or their insight,
If they placed their fingers atop their lofty mounts
in blessing they give thanks, and in calamity they endure.
On a day of tumult, their tips would turn green.

If distance has concealed them from you riding on,
they take no orders, nor are disobeyed when they command.
You know them from their published works.

This Husayn is a life perpetuated for them
and do for them what rain does.
They were not the first dead with him as their namesake.

The Euphrates dwindles, rainclouds withhold, and forth rise
He prayed and his swiftness added to his fervor
their hands amid the clouds, wrung so that the clouds are wrung out.
A sanctuary pigeon, his step pressing on urbanely.

Like an arrow, he won fame when you release it
on battle-day their red tips would turn green.
His parents did not grant him bow or cord.

then you have news of their resurrected one.
Wine is the sweetest thing pressed from it.

This al-Husayn is a life made everlasting for them;
Ibn Layl will not lack his companion’s bow at nightfall
they are not the first dead restored to life through their son.
Due to the length of his journeying and his bone being refined by travel.

He raced into the waste with no shelter to take cover
high-maned, a runner whose every stride is a gallop.
Behind him and no early dew to guard him.

which its two parents, bow and string, did not bestow.
Whether the salt is sweet to him or the bitterness is clear.

He sees its heavens in the water and denies them
long night-journeys, his bones picked clean by travel.
Due to the great difference of forms in his eye.

salt water tastes sweet to him, or murky water turns clear.

He came to tap it until he reached settlements
in which neither hearing nor sight tells him truth.
Where it would relieve his soul’s anguish or diminish it.

While the houses and tents revolve around him
so long have images shifted before his eyes.
A new moon, and for settlements, a full moon is invoked.

and the time has come for his striving to attain victory,
Wealth to be divided, words to be hoarded.

The egg of the kingdom—he protected it and it did not crack
the coolness of his life from the very place it blazes.
Since he buttressed it with opinion, which splits it.

They swore by his name until they became certain
taking from it as extravagantly as his soul wishes, or leaving it.
That if he marched in other than an army, they would be granted victory.

مذ قام يَشعَبُها بالرأي تنفطِرُ
And he guards the kingdom's egg; it has not come close,
If what he did were blamed, nothing could be weighed against it
since he began mending it with counsel, to splitting apart.
Of deficiencies other than that he is human.

لوif سارhe marched فيin غيرthe absence of جيشٍan army أنهمthat they نُصِرواwere granted victory
لو سار في غير جيشٍ أنهم نُصِروا
They sought good fortune in his name, so firmly trusting
Praise suits him until he has no price
that if he marched without an army, they would be victorious.
That would burden him, and until his wealth is scattered.

طلقُ النقيبةِ لم يعقِل سعايته
عنfrom مطلبٍan aim رجبٌRajab يُخشَىis feared ولاnor صَفَرُSafar
عن مطلبٍ رجبٌ يُخشَى ولا صَفَرُ
Of open disposition, his striving has never been tethered
If a man gave himself one day as excess
from an aim by dreaded Rajab, nor by Safar.
He would not give life but as concise.
غَرَّرَhe took risks فيfor العزِّglory حتىuntil نالhe attained غايتَهُits utmost goal

وجانبُ العزِّ مركوبٌ له الغَرَرُ
He ventured hazards for glory until he reached its utmost goal;
I spent my days in woe with you
and glory's flank is ridden at peril.
Then well-being came, though in them is decline.

من النقيصةِ إلا أنه بشرُ
Were he faulted, nothing imputed to him would blemish him
With my luck before your affection I had
as a shortcoming, except that he is human.
A grudge, so I rose with you like an avenging sword.

يغلو عليه وحتى مالُهُ هَدَرُ
Praise has grown so sweet to him that no price for it
May wonders always come to you from me
seems too high, and his wealth is freely squandered.
While in their lands they are squalor.

لم يَهبِ النفسَ إلا وهو مختصِرُ
If a man one day gave his own soul away in excess,
Ships sail accounts presenting to eyes
he would give his soul and still be sparing.
Phantoms all of them deceptions.

Through you, I tested the hard days of my lifetime,
When analyzed, their meanings are their collars—
and they made peace with me, their days sapped of strength.
No freshness, or their words their pearl earrings.

Before your friendship, I had against my fortune
Born from me, though opposing their office
a claim for vengeance; through you I rose like a sword, avenging myself.
Like my father, and her father, ancestry from Mudar.

So from me, and through me, there shall always come to you
Gladdening you and maddening those envious of you
marvels, which in their own homelands are choice verses.
While one people's gain is harm to other people.

They travel as mounts for noble lineages, displaying them
With each new day bringing innovation
before the eyes, with markings that are all white blazes.
The winds and breezes drive them to you.

When they adorn themselves, their meanings are their necklaces of
In their accounting is length though I have notjourneyed
pure gold, or their words are their earrings of pearls.
And in them, falling short of what you deserve.

They are among what I have begotten, though I differ from their lineage:
You have heard others' words as recompense
Kisra is my father, while theirs, by descent, is Mudar.
So how can patience be sweet for the bee's stinger?

ونفعُ قومٍ لقومٍ غيرِهم ضَرَرُ
They delight you and distress those who envy you;
And if words are similar and coincide, the rope’s strand
one people's benefit is another people's harm.
Is alike, a male serpent.

afternoons and mornings bring them to you.

Their pedigrees lend them stature, though they have traveled no
distance; yet they fall short of what you deserve.

And you have already heard others besides them, accepting them;
how can bitter aloes taste sweet to a gatherer of honey?

Though the words may resemble one another and coincide,
a worn-out rope looks, in shape, like a male serpent.
