تهوى وأنت محلأ مصدود — Mihyar Al Daylami

تهَوى وأنت مُحَلَّأٌ مصدودُ
ماءَ النَّقيب وإنه مورودُ
Yearning while adorned, prohibited from drinking
The water of al-Naqib, though it is plentiful
ويُقرّ عينَك والوصالُ مصوِّحٌ
غصنٌ يرفُّ على الحمى ويميدُ
It would delight your eye, though union is prohibited
A branch waves over hot coals and sways
وإذا رغبتَ إلى السحاب فحاجةٌ
لك ما يصوب على الغضا ويجودُ
And if you desire clouds, you need
What pours on the barren valley and is generous
ما ذاك إلا أن عهدَك لم يحُلْ
أفما لحيٍّ في النخيل عهودُ
That is only because your pact has not ended
What pact remains for the living in the date palms?
ومن الشقاوة حافظٌ متجنَّبٌ
يقضي عليه غادرٌ مودودُ
And misfortune preserves one who avoids
Fate's blow against him, continuous
قَسَماً ولم أُقسمْ بسكَّانِ الحمَى
عن رِيبةٍ لكنه تأكيدُ
By God, I did not swear by the dwellers of love
Out of doubt, but as affirmation
لهُمُ وإن مَنعوا مكانُ مَطالبي
وهُمُ وإن كرِهوا الذين أريدُ
For them, even if they refused the place of my hopes
And even if they disliked those I desire
أتنسَّمُ الأرواحَ وهي رواكدٌ
منهم وتُجدبُ أرضُهم فأرودُ
I scent the souls while they are still
And their land dries out so I water it
وأكذِّبُ الواشي إليّ بغدرهم
وعلى الحديثِ دلائلٌ وشُهودُ
I deny the slanderer who comes to me with their betrayal
While evidence and witnesses prove
فهم الصديقُ ولا مودةَ عندهم
وهم الأقاربُ والمزارُ بعيدُ
They are a friend yet harbor no affection
They are kin, yet visiting them is remote
وبأيمَنِ العلَمين من أبياتهم
ظبيٌ يُصادُ الظبيُ وهو يَصيدُ
With the best of two banners, some of their verses
Are a gazelle hunted by a gazelle while it hunts
لاهٍ إذا جمع الرجالُ حلومَهم
حل العزائمَ خصرُهُ المعقودُ
When men gather their meat, the resolution
Of the girded loins melts
يَرمِي القلوبَ وما دمٌ بمطوَّحٍ
ما لم تُرِقه مقلةٌ أو جيدُ
It shoots hearts though no blood is on a slaughter site
Unless split by an arrow or neck
وعدَ الوفاءَ وليس منه فغرَّني
ومن السرابِ إذا اغتررتَ وعودُ
He promised loyalty, yet it was not in him, so he fooled me
While mirages fool when they make promises
أعنو له وأنا العزيزُ بنفسه
وأَلينُ عمداً والفؤادُ جليدُ
I am gentle with him, though I have self-respect
I intentionally soften, though my heart is ice
وإذا عزفتُ فتُبتُ من دِين الهوى
جذبَ الغرامُ بِمقوَدي فأعودُ
And if I begin to repent the love of passion
Desire pulls me back by my leading rope
ولقد أحنّ إلى زرودَ وطينتي
من غير ما فُطرتْ عليه زرودُ
I yearn for the clay and malleability of my origin
Not what I was created upon, rigid
ويشوقُني عَجَفُ الحجازِ وقد ضفا
رِيفُ العراق وظلُّه الممدودُ
The wastelands of Hejaz allure me, though
The countryside of Iraq and its extended shade overwhelm me
ويُطَرِّبُ الشادي فلا يهتزُّني
وينالُ منّي السائقُ الغِرّيدُ
Music of the Sa'd tribe does not transport me
Yet the singing camel driver affects me
ما ذاك إلاّ أنّ أقمارَ الحمى
أفلاكُهنَّ إذا طلعنَ البيدُ
That is only because the moons of love
When they rise, their orbits
طفِق العذولُ وما ارتفدتُ برأيه
فيهن يُبدىءُ ناصحاً ويعيدُ
Finding me unmarried, the bachelor began to advise
Repeating counsel about them
فأنا الذي صدعَ الهوى في أضلعي
ما لا يَلُمُّ العذلُ والتفنيدُ
Yet I am the one passion split in the ribs
Beyond what can be blamed or denied
يا صاحِ هل لك من خليلٍ مؤثرٍ
راضٍ بأن يشقى وأنت سعيدُ
Oh companion, do you have an intimate friend
Content for you to be happy while he is miserable?
متقلقلٍ حتى تقَرَّ وربّما
بَقَّى رقادَك ساهرٌ مجهودُ
Restless until you rest, though he may
Stay up late, exhausted
يَلقَى القواذعَ أو يقيك لسانُه ال
مشهورُ فيك وعزمُه المشدودُ
Taking blows, or his sharp tongue protects you
Well-known in you, his firm resolve
كذُبالةِ المِصباحِ أنت بضوئها
في الليلة الظلماء وهي وَقودُ
You are like the lamp's light in the darkest night
While it is the fuel
من دون عِرضك نَثْلَةٌ منضوضة
منه وإن لم يقضها داودُ
Without your glory, a contemptible wretch
Even if David did not decree it
قلَّ الثِّقاتُ فإن عَلِقتَ بواحدٍ
فاشدد يديك عليه فهو وحيدُ
Trustworthy ones are few, so if you take one
Grasp his hand, for he is alone
لا يُبعِد اللّهُ الألى حفِظ العلا
بيتٌ لهم حولَ النجوم مَشِيدُ
God does not deprive the family who preserved glory
A house for them, built near the stars
وإذا اقشعرّ العامُ أغدقَ من ندَى
أيديهم الوادي ورَفَّ العودُ
When the year frowns, their hands pour down
Dew in the valley, and the peg rises
وإذا سرى نقصُ القبائل أقبلتْ
تَنمِي المكارمُ فيهُمُ وتزيدُ
When the tribes' decline spreads, virtues
Grow and increase through them
لا يعدَمُ الجودَ الغريبُ ومنهُمُ
شخصٌ على وجه الثرى موجودُ
Generosity is never absent from the stranger, and among them
A person exists upon the face of the earth
بيتٌ بنو عبدِ الرحيم طُنوبُهُ
وأبوهُمُ ساقٌ له وعمودُ
A house whose pillars are the family of ‘Abd al-Rahim
Their father a column and pillar for it
تطغى رياحُ البِرِّ فيه عواصفاً
ولها بأثناء البيوت ركودُ
The winds of righteousness blow fiercely around it
Calming through the homes
مِن حولهِ غُررٌ لهم وضّاحةٌ
تبيضّ منهنّ الليالي السودُ
Around it are precious pearls, radiant
Nights blackened by them
وإذا أناخ به الوفودُ رأيتَهم
كرماً قياماً والوفودُ قعودُ
When delegations stop by, you see them
Bountifully standing while delegations sit
فإذا أردتَ طُروقَهُ لملمَّةٍ
فأبو المعالي بابُهُ المقصودُ
So if you desire its summits for a need
Abu al-Ma‘ali is its destination
جاراهُمُ فأراك غائبَ أمسهم
رؤيا الزيادة يومُهُ المشهودُ
Their neighbors see you absent yesterday
Seeing future increase, a witnessed day
ومضَى يُريدُ النجم حتى جازه
شوطاً فقال النجمُ أين تريدُ
A star journeyed desiring another star until
It crossed a distance, so the star said, "Where do you go?"
شرَفٌ كمالُ المُلك في أطرافه
حامٍ عن الحسب الكريم يذودُ
"Elevation, the perfection of sovereignty in its horizons
Protecting precious lineage, warding off"
فَصحَ البوازلَ وهو قارحُ عامه
وأجابَ داعي الشَّيبِ وهو وليدُ
The dilemmas of the year woke healthy and fighting
Responding to the call of old age as a youth
يقظانُ يقدَحُ في الخطوب بعزمةٍ
تسري به وبنو الطريق هُجودُ
Awake, lighting boldness with firm resolve
Flowing with it while the roads' people freeze
عَشِقَ العلا وسعَى فأدرك وصلَها
متروِّحاً وحسودُه مكدودُ
He loved the heights, sought and attained its union
Strolling while his envious ones burn
ووفَى بأشراطِ الكفايةِ داخلاً
من بابها ورِتاجُها مسدودُ
He fulfilled the conditions of competence, entering
Through its door while its bolt was locked
عبِقٌ بأرواح السيادة عِطفُه
فكأنه في حِجرها مولودُ
His manner breathes the spirits of leadership
As if he was born in its lap
لو طاول الغَمْرُ المغفَّلُ خُلقَه
شيئاً تعلَّم منه كيفَ يسودُ
If ignorance were to taint his nature at all
He would learn from it how to rule
هَشٌّ لصدر اليوم إمَّا مالُه
فيه وإمّا قربهُ المنقودُ
Delicate towards the present day, either his
Wealth in it or his scanned sacrifice
لا قبلَ نائله إذا سُئل الندى
وعدٌ ولا قبل اللقاءِ وعيدُ
No, before fulfilling its asker when asked for help
A promise, nor before the meeting, a threat
وإذا الخلالُ الصالحاتُ تكاملتْ
فهي الشجاعةُ أو أخوها الجودُ
When good traits come together fully
They are valor or its brother, generosity
أفنَى الثراءَ على الثناءِ وعلمُهُ
أنّ الفَناءَ مع الثناءِ خُلودُ
He spent wealth for praise, and his knowledge
That to fade with praise is eternity
ولربّما بُلي البخيلُ بموقفٍ
يُخزيه فيه مالُهُ المعبودُ
The miser is sometimes tried with a situation
Where his idolized money shames him
لك من خلائقه إذا مارستَه
جنبانِ ذا سهلٌ وذاك شديدُ
From his manners, if you deal with him
Two sides, one easy and one severe
فمع الحفيظة قسوةٌ وفظاظةٌ
حتى كأنّ فؤادَه جُلمودُ
With the cynical, harshness and impudence
As if his heart is frozen
ومع المودّة هِزّةٌ وتعطّفٌ
فتقول غصنُ البانة الأُملودُ
With kindness, swaying and sympathy
You'd say a pliant branch
يا أُسْرةَ المجدِ التي لم تنتبهْ
عن مثلها الأيامُ وهي رُقودُ
O family of glory time does not rouse
Itself from the like of you while asleep
كُفِيَ الزمانُ العَينَ في أعيانكم
إن الزمانَ عليكُمُ محسودُ
Time's eye is content with your elites
For time toward you is envious
لولاكُمُ نُسِي الثناءُ ولم يكن
في الناس لا رِفدٌ ولا مرفودُ
Were it not for you, praise would be forgotten
No increase or decrease among people
ولكان قُلُّ الفضلِ أو ميسورُهُ
يفنَى فَناءَ كثيرهِ ويَبيدُ
Scarce merit or its abundance would fade
Like its many and perish
بكُمُ رددتُ يدَ الزمانِ وباعُهُ
متوسِّعٌ بمَساءتي ممدودُ
Through you I pushed back time’s hand and sale
Expanding with my difficulties stretched
وحمَلتُ مضعوفاً ثقائلَ خطبه
وهي التي تُوهِي القُوَى وتؤودُ
And I carried the heavy burdens of its sorrows
Which exhaust might and make frail
وخلطتموني بالنفوس فمن يقَعْ
جُنُباً فإني منكُمُ معدودُ
You mixed me with souls, so if one
Turns, I am counted among you
وإذا تلوَّنَ معشرٌ بتلوُّنِ ال
دُنيا فعهدِي فيكم المعهودُ
If a group takes on the changing of the
World, my pact in you remains
وعُنيتَ أنت بخَلَّتي فسددتَها
ونظمتَها بالجودِ وهي بديدُ
You cared for my stinginess, so you guided it
And composed it with generosity, though crude
وإذا تقاعدَ صاحبٌ عن نُصرتي
فالنصرُ حظّي منكَ والتأييدُ
When an ally withdraws from helping me
Help is my fortune from you and support
فلأجزينَّك خيرَ ما جازَى امرؤٌ
وجَدَ المقال فقالَ وهو مُجيدُ
So let me reward you the best a man rewarded
Who found eloquence and spoke masterfully
مما يُخالُ قوافياً ومعانياً
بالسمعِ وهو حَبائرٌ وبُرودُ
Of what competes in rhyme and meaning
Through hearing, intricate and cool
ويكون زادَ السَّفرِ في ليل الطَّوَى
ويقادُ تتبعه المهاري القُودُ
To be provisions for the night journey
Pursued by the guided caravan
من كلِّ مخلوعٍ عِذارُ محبِّها
فيها ومعذورٍ بها المعمودُ
For every censured lover an excuse
In it, and the baptized pardoned through it
وكأنها بين الشفاهِ قصائداً
فوق النحورِ قلائدٌ وعقودُ
As if it were poems between the lips
Above the throat, necklaces and chokers
عذراء تحسُدها إذا أنصفتَها
أوقاتَها منك الكعابُ الرودُ
An untouched maiden, envied by you
In her times, by the shy, fleeing gazelle
يحتثُّها شوقاً لك النيروزُ أو
يأتي فيُطلِعَها عليك العيدُ
Yearning for you makes Nowruz excite her
Or Eid comes to show her you
لك من بشائرها الخلودُ ودولةٌ
تمضي بها الأيَّامُ ثم تعودُ
For you are tidings of eternity, a dominion
Passing through days, then returning
ما أحسبُ الدنيا تطيبُ وأمرُها
إلاَّ إلى تدبيركم مردودُ
I don’t think life is good unless
Your management makes it rebound
فبقيتم والحاسدون علاكُمُ
لا خيرَ فيما ليس فيه حسودُ
You remained while the envious of you
Have no good - no good without envy
