    يَلوحُ كِتابٌ بَينَ عَينَيهِ كافِرُ

    Ya‘qub son of Dawud will be gathered for judgment, disappointed;

    An inscription gleams between his eyes: 'Unbeliever.'

    His betrayal of al-Mahdi ruined his reputation,

    and so he became like one whom the graves have hidden away.

    From you there appeared to al-Mahdi, shining like dawn,

    the deceit that consciences had kept concealed.

    And is there, for dawn’s whiteness, if its light shines forth

    and cleaves the gloom, any veil of the night’s darkness?

    Was it a rank above the one you had attained

    that you sought? May you find no deliverance from what you dread!
