Whenever I remember al-Nazim and Mutriq,
When I recall the singing-girl and her lute,
I sob, and al-Nazim and Mutriq make me weep.
I moan, and the singing-girl and lute make me weep.
تَحِنُّshe yearns قَلوصيmy young she-camel نَحوَtoward صَنعاءَSana'a إِذsince رَأَتshe saw

My young she-camel yearns toward Sana'a, for she has seen
My heart yearns toward Sanaa, when it saw
a raincloud flashing with lightning from Sana'a's direction.
The sky of life lightning toward Sanaa.
تَحِنُّshe yearns إِلىfor مَرعىًa pasture بِصَنعاءَin Sana'a مُخضِبٍlush

She yearns for a lush pasture in Sana'a,
It yearns for a meadow in Sanaa, turned green,
and abundant drink, its water never muddied.
Whose draught of fresh water is never sullied.

And she trusts he will give her master a morning draught—
My heart has learned that it must lose its soul
when you reach Ma'n's troughs—and an evening draught.
When it attains the basin of meaning and overflows.

She heads for a Shurayki; with rain have gleamed
It hopes for a companion whose being scintillates with life
his portents for the lightning-watchers, and they prove true.
Whose swords against his detractors give proof.
