We praised what Ibn Yahya had accomplished, and so

With his arrival, the birds began to fly more auspiciously for us.

Our eyes did not sleep until they saw him,

And until he returned, they remained brimming with tears.

Indeed, his cavalry and his men came to us at dawn,

With a splendid chief of men in valor and eminence.

He drove the enemy from Khurasan, just as

Morning's brightness drove off night's cloak, sending it fleeing.

Indeed, those in Merv that evening were alarmed by his journey

To us, and said, 'Our people have scattered.'

At a time when he cast aside the lock of every grievance,

And, with pardon, freed the shackled captive.

And spread among them, with justice and without vaunting his favors,

Enduring gifts of kindness, bestowed time and again.

Thus he drove the terrors of fear away from them,

And let the seeker of safety among them go out and come in.

And aided the orphans among them with his handfuls of bounty,

So he was more tender and more beneficent than fathers.

When men sought the height of excellence in generosity

And in valor, they found it farther away than the stars.

Through al-Fadl, Yahya and Khalid soared upward

To every endeavor that was more splendid and more glorious.

He is gentle with whoever gives the caliph obedience,

And makes the keen Indian-steel sword drink the rebels' blood.

His swords humbled hypocrisy together with polytheism,

And were everlasting honor for the people of the faith.

And tightened the strands of allegiance to the chosen one, who

For his merit, was invested with the caliph's commission—

The namesake of the Prophet—the opener and the seal—through whom

God bestowed every good and guided aright.

You overran the Kabuli's mountains, and did not leave

Within them any hearth for the fires of error.

Then you sent cavalry up them, which trampled his hosts,

Leaving slain men, captives, and a routed, scattered remnant.

Your bounty returned to Ibn al-Barm after

He cried out in distress, forsaken, facing death alone.
