طافَcame by الخَيالُthe dream-vision وَحَيِّهِand greet it بِسلامِwith peace
طافَ الخَيالُ وَحَيِّهِ بِسلامِ
أَنّيhow أَلَمَّcame visiting وَلَيسَand it is not حينَa time for لِمامِa visit
أَنّي أَلَمَّ وَلَيسَ حينَ لِمامِ
The dream-vision came by; greet it with peace.
The imagination wandered with its visions in peace
How did it come visiting, when this is no time for a visit?
Though I suffered, it was not yet time for blame
ياO اِبنَson of الَّذيthe one who وَرِثinherited from النّبِيَّthe Prophet مُحَمَّداًMuhammad
يا اِبنَ الَّذي وَرِث النّبِيَّ مُحَمَّداً
دونَto the exclusion of الأَقارِبِthe relatives مِنamong ذَويthose with الأَرحامِties of kinship
دونَ الأَقارِبِ مِن ذَوي الأَرحامِ
O son of him who inherited from the Prophet Muhammad,
O son of him who inherited the Prophet Muhammad
to the exclusion of the other blood relatives.
Above all relatives from maternal uncles
أَلوَحيُrevelation بِينَbetween بَنيthe sons of البَناتِthe daughters وَبَينَكُمand between you
أَلوَحيُ بِينَ بَني البَناتِ وَبَينَكُم
قَطَعَended الخِصامَthe dispute فَلاتَso it is not حينَa time for خِصامِdispute
قَطَعَ الخِصامَ فَلاتَ حينَ خِصامِ
Revelation, between the daughters' sons and you,
The revelation arbitrated between the daughters and you
has ended the dispute, so this is no time for dispute.
It ended the dispute, so do not dispute
ماno لِلنِّساءِfor women مَعَalongside الرِجالِmen فَريضَةٌan allotted share
ما لِلنِّساءِ مَعَ الرِجالِ فَريضَةٌ
نَزَلَتwas revealed بِذلِكِto that effect سورَةُthe surah الأَنعامِal-An'am (The Cattle)
نَزَلَت بِذلِكِ سورَةُ الأَنعامِ
Women have no allotted share alongside men;
Women have no obligation towards men
The surah al-An'am was revealed to that effect.
A verse in Surat Al-An'am descended about that
أَنّيhow يَكونُcould it be وَلَيسَand it is not ذاكَthat بِكائِنٍever to happen
أَنّي يَكونُ وَلَيسَ ذاكَ بِكائِنٍ
لِبَنيfor the sons of البَناتِthe daughters وِراثَةُthe inheritance of الأَعمامِthe paternal uncles
لِبَني البَناتِ وِراثَةُ الأَعمامِ
How could it be—and it cannot be—
It will not happen, though it is not happening
that daughters' sons receive the paternal uncles' inheritance?
That paternal uncles inherit daughters
أَلغىannulled سِهامَهُمُtheir shares الكِتابُthe Book فَحاوَلواso they tried
أَلغى سِهامَهُمُ الكِتابُ فَحاوَلوا
أَنto يَشرَعواenter فيهاinto it بِغَيرِwithout سِهامِshares
أَن يَشرَعوا فيها بِغَيرِ سِهامِ
The Book annulled their shares, so they tried
The Book nullified their shares, but they tried
to enter into it without any shares.
To legitimize it without shares
ظَفِرَتwon بَنوthe sons of ساقيthe water-giver to الحَجيجِthe pilgrims بِحَقِّهِمwith their rightful due
ظَفِرَت بَنو ساقي الحَجيجِ بِحَقِّهِم
وَغُرِرتُمُand you were deceived بِتَوَهُّمِby the illusions of الأَحلامِdreams
وَغُرِرتُمُ بِتَوَهُّمِ الأَحلامِ
The sons of the pilgrims' water-giver have won their rightful due,
The clan of Saaqiy al-Hajj won their right
and you were deceived by the illusions of dreams.
While you were deluded by fanciful dreams
خَلّواclear الطَريقَthe way لِمَعشَرٍfor a people عاداتُهُمtheir customs
خَلّوا الطَريقَ لِمَعشَرٍ عاداتُهُم
حَطمُcrushing المَناكِبِshoulders كُلَّevery يَومِday of زِحامِjostling
حَطمُ المَناكِبِ كُلَّ يَومِ زِحامِ
Clear the way for a people whose custom is
Make way for a group whose traits
to crush shoulders on every day of jostling.
Are breaking shoulders every crowded day
وَاِرضَواand be content بِماwith what قَسَمَallotted الإِلهُGod لَكُمto you بِهِthrough it
وَاِرضَوا بِما قَسَمَ الإِلهُ لَكُم بِهِ
وَدَعواand leave وِراثَةَthe inheritance of كُلِّevery أَصيَدَproud, erect-headed حامِdefender
وَدَعوا وِراثَةَ كُلِّ أَصيَدَ حامِ
And be content with what God has allotted you through it,
Be content with what God allotted you
and leave alone the inheritance of every proud defender.
And leave the inheritance of every game bird cooked by Ham
