تَشابَهَresembled one another يَومَاthe two days of بَأسِهِhis valor وَنَوالِهِand his bounty
تَشابَهَ يَومَا بَأسِهِ وَنَوالِهِ
فَماso no أَحَدٌone يَدريknows لأَيِّهِماto which of the two الفَضلُsuperiority belongs
فَما أَحَدٌ يَدري لأَيِّهِما الفَضلُ
The day of his valor and the day of his bounty were alike,
His might and bounty were alike one day,
so no one knows which of the two is superior.
None could discern to which the prize was due.
شَبيهُresembling أَبيهِhis father مَنظَراin appearance وَخَليقَةًand in character
شَبيهُ أَبيهِ مَنظَرا وَخَليقَةً
كَماjust as حُذِيَتwas cut to shape يَوماًonce عَلىto the pattern of أُختِهاits sister sandal النَعلُthe sandal
كَما حُذِيَت يَوماً عَلى أُختِها النَعلُ
He resembles his father in appearance and character,
The father's living image, form and face
as a sandal was once cut to match its mate.
Once challenged sister shoe for sister shoe.
