وَهاجَتand stirred لَناin us الشَوقُlonging الدِيارُthe dwellings البَلاقِعُdesolate
After we left, the palaces stood empty of Layla's kin;
and the desolate dwellings stirred longing in us.
أَبيتُI spend the night وَجَنبيand my side لاdoes not يُلائِمُrest easily on مَضجَعاًa bed

I spend the night, my side finding no ease upon a bed,
when beds lie still beneath reclining sides.
أَتانيreached me مِنَfrom المَهدِيِّal-Mahdi قَولٌa word كَأَنَّماas though
بِهِwith it اِحتَزَّcut off أَنفىmy nose مُدمِنُone steeped in الضِغنِrancor جادِعُa mutilator
A word reached me from al-Mahdi, as though
with it a mutilator steeped in rancor had severed my nose.
وَقُلتُand I said وَقَدwhile already خِفتُI feared الَّتيthat which لاno شَوىًslight injury لَهاfor it
بِلاwithout حَدَثٍan offense إِنّيindeed I am إِلىto اللَهِGod راجِعُreturning
And I said, fearing that which never merely wounds,
though I had done no wrong: 'Indeed, to God I return.'
وَماليand I have no إِلىto المَهدِيِّal-Mahdi لَوif كُنتُI were مُذنِباًguilty

With al-Mahdi I have, even if I were guilty,
no intercessor among men save his unclouded forbearance.
وَلاnor هُوَhe عِندَin times of السُخطِanger مِنهُfrom him وَلاnor الرِضاcontentment
بِغَيرِin any way other than الَّذيwhat يَرضىhe approves بِهِof it لِيَfor me صانِعُacting
Nor, whether he feels anger or contentment,
will he do to me anything but what he deems right.
عَلَيهِupon him مِنَof التَقوىpiety رداءٌa robe يَكُنُّهُshields him
وَلِلحَقِّand truth has نورٌa light بَينَbetween عَينَيهِhis eyes ساطِعُradiant
Upon him is a robe of piety that shelters him,
and truth's light shines between his eyes.
يُغَضُّis lowered لَهُbefore him طَرفُthe gaze العُيونِof the eyes وَطَرفُهُand his gaze
عَلىtoward غَيرِهِothers besides him مِنfrom خَشيَةِfear of اللَهِGod خاشِعُhumble
Eyes lower their gaze before him, while his own gaze
is humble toward others through fear of God.
هَلِwill ...? البابُthe door مُفضٍleading بيwith me إِلَيكَto you اِبنَson of هاشِمٍHashim
فَعذرىَfor my defense إِنif أَفضىgives access بِيَwith me البابُthe door ناصِعُclear
Will the door lead me to you, son of Hashim?
For my defense, if the door admits me, is clear.
أَتَيتI approached امرَأًa man أَطلَقتَهُyou freed him مِنfrom وِثاقِهِhis bonds
وَقَدand already أُنشِبَتhad been fastened فيin أَخدَعَيهِhis two neck-veins الجَوامِعُthe fetters
I approached a man whom you had freed from his bonds,
when fetters had been fixed at both sides of his neck.
وَجَلّىand dispelled ضَبابَthe fog العُدمِof poverty عَنهُfrom him وَراشَهُand enriched him
وَأَنهَضَهُand raised him up مَعروفُكَyour kindness المُتَتابِعُrepeated
And poverty's fog was lifted from him, and he was enriched
and raised up by your repeated kindness.
فَقُلتُso I said وَزيرٌa minister ناصِحٌloyal قَدindeed تَتابَعَتhave followed in succession
عَلَيهِupon him بِإِنعامِthrough the bounty of الإِمامِthe Imam الصَنائِعُfavors
So I said: 'A loyal minister, who has been granted
successive favors through the Imam's bounty.'
وَماand not كانَwas ليfor me إِلّاexcept إِلَيكَto you ذَريعَةٌa means of access
وَماand no مَلِكٌking إِلّاexcept إِلَيهِto him الذَرائِعُthe means of approach
He was only a means for me to reach you,
and to every king there are avenues of approach.
وَإِنand if كانَwas مَطوِيّاًfolded عَلىaround الغَدرِtreachery كَشحُهُhis flank
فَلَمthen did not أَدرِI know مِنهُof him ماwhat تُجِنُّconceal الأَضالِعُthe ribs
And if his flank lay folded around treachery,
I did not know what his ribs concealed.
وَقُلand say مِثلُthe like of ماwhat قالَsaid اِبنُthe son of يَعقوبِJacob يوسِفُJoseph
لإِخوانِهِto his brothers قَولاًwords لَهُfor it القَلبُthe heart نائِعُyearning
And say as Joseph, Jacob's son, said
to his brothers—words for which the heart yearns:
تَنَفَّسbreathe freely فَلاso no تَثريبَreproach إِنَّكَindeed you are آمِنٌsafe
وَإِنّيand indeed I am لَكَfor you المَعروفَkindness وَالقَدرَand honor جامِعُbringing together
'Breathe freely: no reproach; you are safe,
and I shall bestow on you both favor and honor.'
فَماfor not الناسُpeople إِلّاexcept ناظِرٌa watcher مُتَشَوِّقٌeager
إِلىtoward كُلِّall ماthat تُسديyou bestow إِلَيَّupon me وَسامِعُand a listener
For everyone is watching eagerly
and listening for all that you bestow upon me.
