مَسَحَتstroked رَبيعَةُRabi‘a وَجهَthe face of مَعنٍMa‘n سابِقاًin the lead
مَسَحَت رَبيعَةُ وَجهَ مَعنٍ سابِقاً
لَمّاwhen جَرىhe raced وَجَرىand raced ذَووmen of الأَحسابِnoble lineage
لَمّا جَرى وَجَرى ذَوو الأَحسابِ
Rabi‘a stroked Ma‘n’s face as he raced ahead,
When he raced, and men of noble lineage raced.
خَلّىleft clear الطَريقَthe way لَهُfor him الجِيادُthe steeds قَواصِراًfalling short
خَلّى الطَريقَ لَهُ الجِيادُ قَواصِراً
مِنfrom دونِshort of غايَتِهِhis finish line وَهُنَّwhile they كَوابيstumbling
مِن دونِ غايَتِهِ وَهُنَّ كَوابي
The steeds yielded him the way, falling short
Of his finish line, while they stumbled.
