بِقَبرٍ أَميرِ المُؤمِنينَ المَقابِرُ
Indeed, they now strut proudly in every town—
the cemeteries, with the grave of the Commander of the Faithful.

وَأَلوَت بِذي القَرنَينِ مِنها الدَوائِرُ
To him came she who stripped Solomon of his kingdom,
and whose turns of misfortune swept Dhu al-Qarnayn away.
وَلَوand if كانَwere تَجريدُunsheathing السُيوفِthe swords يَرُدُّهاcould repel her

And if unsheathing swords could have repelled her,
the keen-edged swords would have turned her edge away from him,

وَتَروى لَدى الرَوع الرِماحُ الشَواجِرُ
by hands that give sharp swords their due,
and, amid battle's terror, the clashing spears are quenched.
وَلَوand if لَمnot تُسَكَّنwere soothed بِاِبنِهِby his son بَعدَafter مَوتِهِhis death

And had they not been soothed by his son after his death,
the pulpits would never have ceased weeping for him.
