ذَهَبَwent off الفَرَزدَقُal-Farazdaq بِالفَخارِwith glory وَإِنَّماbut only
حُلوُthe sweetness of القَصيدِverse وَمُرُّهُand its bitterness لِجَريرِbelonging to Jarir
Al-Farazdaq carried off the glory, but
the sweetness and bitterness of verse are Jarir's alone.
وَلَقَدand indeed هَجاhe lampooned فَأَمَضَّand so painfully stung أَخطَلَal-Akhtal تَغلِبٍTaghlib
وَحَوىand amassed اللُهاlavish gifts بِبَيانِهِthrough his eloquence المَشهورِrenowned
Indeed, he lampooned and sorely stung al-Akhtal of Taghlib,
and amassed lavish gifts through his renowned eloquence.
كُلُّeach of الثَلاثَةِthe three قَدindeed أَبَرَّexcelled بِمَدحِهِwith his panegyrics
وَهِجاؤُهُand his satire قَدindeed سارَtraveled كُلَّevery مَسيرِpath
Each of the three excelled with his panegyrics,
and his satire has traveled every path.
وَلَقَدand indeed جَرَيتُI raced مَعَwith الجِيادِthe thoroughbreds فَفُتُّهاand so outstripped them
بِعِنانِby a rein's length لاnot شَبِمchilled وَلاnor مَبهورِbreathless
Indeed, I raced with the thoroughbreds and outstripped them
by a rein's length, neither chilled nor breathless.
ماnot نالَتِgained الشُعَراءُthe poets مِنfrom مُستَخلَفٍa caliph
ماwhat نِلتُI gained مِنof جاهٍrank وَأَخذِand acquisition of بُورِfallow land
The poets have not gained from a caliph
what I gained in rank and in acquiring fallow land.
عَزَّتsurpassed مَعاًall together عِندَbefore المُلوكِkings مَقاليmy words
ماwhat قالَsaid حَيُّهُمُtheir living مَعَalong with المَقبورِthe buried dead
Before kings, my words surpassed all
that their living and their buried dead have said.
وَلَقَدand indeed حُبيتُI was granted بِأَلفِwith a thousand أَلفٍthousand لَمnot تُثَبbe awarded
إِلّاexcept بِسَيبِthrough the bounty of خَليفَةٍa caliph وَأَميرِand a prince
Indeed, I was granted a thousand thousand, never awarded
except through the bounty of a caliph and a prince.
ماnot زِلتُI have ceased آنَفُI disdain أَنto اُؤَلِّفَI compose مِدحَةًa panegyric
إِلّاexcept لِصاحِبfor a master of مِنبَرٍa pulpit وَسَريرٍand a throne
I have always disdained composing a panegyric
except for a master of pulpit and throne.
ماnot ضَرَّنيharmed me حَسَدُthe envy of اللِئامِthe base وَلَمand not يَزَلhas ceased
ذوa man of الفَضلِmerit يَحسَدُهُenvy him ذَووthose of التَقصيرِshortcoming
The envy of the base has not harmed me; ever
the man of merit is envied by those who fall short.
أَروىI quench الظِلماءَthe darkness (likely intended: the thirsty) بِكُلِّwith every حَوضٍbasin مُفعَمٍbrimful
جوداًgenerously وَأُترِعُand I fill to the brim لِلسِغابِfor the hungry قُدوريmy cooking pots
I quench the thirsty with every brimful basin,
generously, and fill my cooking pots for the hungry.
وَتَظلُّand remain لِلإِحسانِfor generosity ضامِنَةَguaranteeing القَرىhospitality
مِنfrom كُلِّevery تامِكَةِlofty السَنامِthe hump عَقيريmy slaughtered camels
And, in generosity, hospitality remains assured
by my slaughtered camels, each with a lofty hump.
I am given (likely intended: I give) اللُهاlavish gifts مُتَبَرِّعاًfreely عَوداًagain عَلىto
بَدءٍthe beginning وَذاكَand that عَلَيَّupon me غَيرُnot كَثيرِmuch
I freely give lavish gifts, time after
time, and that is no great burden to me.
وَإِذاand when هَدَرتُI bellowed مَعَwith القُرومُthe camel sires مُحاضِراًcontending
فيin مَوطِنٍan arena فَضَحَput to shame القُرومَthe camel sires هَديريmy bellowing
And when I bellow, contending with the camel sires,
in an arena, my bellowing puts the sires to shame.
