The early-departing caravans stirred your longing

on the day at al-Liwa, and you remained full of sorrow.

But for hope in you, my she-camel would not have crossed

the expanse of al-Dabil, nor the villages of Najran.

What a fine haven for the hopeful and the fearful,

among those whom the calamities of time strike:

Ma'n son of Za'idah, through whom

the sons of Shayban gained honor upon honor.

A mountain in whom all Nizar seeks refuge,

with summits hard to scale and unassailable flanks.

If the days of great deeds are counted, his are but

two days: a day of bounty and a day of spear-thrusts.

His spearheads drive through, and his face shines

amid terror, when faces change color.

He clothes thrones and pulpits in splendor

and adorns them with commanding presence and eloquence.

Both your hands, O Abu al-Walid, besides their bounty,

were made for a sword's hilt and for reins.

He brought fine steeds from Iraq, grim-faced,

    slender-bellied, led by halters,

short-coated, arched-legged, keeping pace by night

across the deserts with every swift, obedient she-camel.

From every tall, long-bodied mare whose breast shows

lance scars, and every slender-bellied stallion like a wolf,

    until they raided Hadramawt, lean,

    hollow-flanked like swooping eagles.

Your forefather Matar, O Abu al-Walid, when he rose

with the sword, seized al-Nu'man's purebred camels.

May my soul ransom Abu al-Walid when there rises

the dust of hooves, and spears are close at hand.

You remained marked for battle on the day of al-Hashimiyyah,

with your sword, defending the caliph of the Most Merciful.

So you defended his domain and were his shield

against the blows of every Indian-steel sword and spearhead.

You are the one whose bounty Rabi'ah hopes for

and whom it keeps ready for the calamities of time.

You surpassed those who hoped for your bounty; and no builder has reached

even your lowest edifice of noble deeds.

Indeed, I have seen you enamored of praiseworthy deeds,

    buying them at lavish prices.

So when you perform a kindness, you complete it

and nurture it with added gifts of kindness.
