تَخَيَّرتُI chose لِلمَدحِfor praise اِبنَthe son of يَحيىYahya بِنson of خالِدٍKhalid
تَخَيَّرتُ لِلمَدحِ اِبنَ يَحيى بِن خالِدٍ
فَحَسبيso enough for me وَلَمand did not أَظلِمI do wrong بِأَنby the fact that أَتَخَيَّراI choose
فَحَسبي وَلَم أَظلِم بِأَن أَتَخَيَّرا
I chose for praise the son of Yahya ibn Khalid.
I have chosen to praise the son of Yahya son of Khalid
So that suffices for me; I did no wrong in choosing.
I am content and have not wronged by choosing him
لَهُhe has عادَةٌa custom أَنto يَبسُطَextend العَدلَjustice وَالنَدىand generosity
لَهُ عادَةٌ أَن يَبسُطَ العَدلَ وَالنَدى
لِمَنto those whom ساسَhe governed مِنfrom قَحطانَQahtan أَوor مَنthose who تَنَزَّراaffiliated themselves with Nizar
لِمَن ساسَ مِن قَحطانَ أَو مَن تَنَزَّرا
It is his custom to extend justice and generosity
He has the habit of extending justice and benevolence
to those he governed, whether of Qahtan or affiliated with Nizar.
To whoever descended from Qahtan or wore a cloak
إِلىto المِنبَرِthe pulpit الشَرقِيِّthe eastern سارَhe went وَلَمand has not يَزَلceased
إِلى المِنبَرِ الشَرقِيِّ سارَ وَلَم يَزَل
لَهُhe has والِدٌa father يَعلوhe mounts سَريراًa throne وَمِنبَراand a pulpit
لَهُ والِدٌ يَعلو سَريراً وَمِنبَرا
To the eastern pulpit he went, and he has always
He went to the eastern pulpit and did not cease
had a father who mounts a throne and a pulpit.
His father sits on a throne and pulpit
يُعَدُّis reckoned وَيَحيىand Yahya البَرمَكِيُّthe Barmakid وَلاand not يُرىis seen
يُعَدُّ وَيَحيى البَرمَكِيُّ وَلا يُرى
لَهُof his الدَهرَthrough all time إِلّاexcept قائِداًa commander أَوor مُؤَمَّراan appointed ruler
لَهُ الدَهرَ إِلّا قائِداً أَو مُؤَمَّرا
He is reckoned with Yahya the Barmakid, and no forebear is seen
Yahya al-Barmaki leads and is not seen
of his, through all time, except as a commander or an appointed ruler.
