يَقُولونthey say ليto me أَعرَضتَyou turned away عَمَّنfrom the one whom تُحبُّهُyou love him
كَذَبتُمyou lied وَلَكنand yet لَمnot يَكُنwas رائِقَserene النَفسِin spirit
They say to me, “You have turned away from the one you love.”
They say that I have turned away from the one I love
You lie; yet he was not serene in spirit.
They lied, but he was not gentle of spirit
وَلَمand not يَكُنwas الإِعراضُturning away مِنّيon my part تَعَمُّداًdeliberate
وَهَلand (question marker) يُمكِنُis possible الإِعراضُturning away عَنfrom غايَةِthe height of الأُنسِintimacy
Nor was my turning away deliberate.
My turning away was not intentional
And can one turn away from the height of intimacy?
How could one turn away from the pinnacle of intimacy?
وَلَكنbut صَرَفتُI averted الطَرفَthe gaze مِنfrom نُورthe light of وَجهِهِhis face
كَماjust as تُصرَفُare averted الأَبصارُeyes عَنfrom قُرصَةِthe disc of الشَمسِthe sun
But I averted my gaze from the light of his face,
Rather, I averted my eyes from the light of his face
As eyes are averted from the disc of the sun.
As sights turn away from the disk of the sun
