عِجِبتُI marveled لِمَنat whoever يَرجوhopes for مَتاباًrepentance لِجاهِلٍfor an ignorant man
عِجِبتُ لِمَن يَرجو مَتاباً لِجاهِلٍ
وَماand not عِندَهُin his understanding أَنَّthat الذُنوبَthe sins ذُنوبُsins
وَما عِندَهُ أَنَّ الذُنوبَ ذُنوبُ
I marvel at one who hopes for an ignorant man's repentance,
I wonder at one who hopes for repentance from an ignorant man
though he does not recognize that sins are sins.
Who does not believe that sins are really sins
إِذاif كانَis ذَنبُsin المَرءِof a man لِلمَرءِfor the man شَيمَةًa character trait
إِذا كانَ ذَنبُ المَرءِ لِلمَرءِ شَيمَةً
وَلَمand has not يَرَهُseen it ذَنباًa sin فَكَيفَthen how يَتوبُhe repents
وَلَم يَرَهُ ذَنباً فَكَيفَ يَتوبُ
If a man's sin is part of his nature,
If a man's sin becomes his very nature
and he does not see it as a sin, then how can he repent?
And he does not see it as sin, how can he repent?
