    فَقَلبُكَ خَفّاقٌ وَدَمعُكَ هَتّانُ

    Sorrows have revisited you at the memory of loved ones;

    So your heart flutters, and your tears pour down.

    You yearn for them despite the distance to their abode,

    And between you and meeting them lie deserts and towns.

    My two friends, no affection on earth is pure

    Unless a balance purifies that affection.

    وَكُلُّ كَلام الشَرّ زورٌ وَبُهتانُ

    He accused me falsely, though he knew the truth;

    And all evil speech is falsehood and slander.

    I spoke and, with eloquence, confounded Iraq,

    And silenced all the allusions Khurasan holds.

    Had ʿUkāẓ heard my eloquence as I hear it,

    Saḥbān would not have made ears ring with his renown.

    And had I lived in the generation of the ancients, never would

    Ḥassān have been acclaimed for excellence in poetry.
