O you who have taken a station in the heights of glory,
Whose two grandfathers founded it—and how firmly!
لَمdid not يَترُكاthe two leave فيin العُلىglory حَظّاًa share لِمُلتَمِسٍfor a seeker

They left no share in glory for any seeker;
This one and that are equals, O son of Idris.
وافىarrived كَتابُكُمُyour letter فَاِرتَدَّso returned ليto me جَذَليmy joy
وَاِعتَضتُand I found compensation مِنfor فَرطِthe intensity of أَشواقيmy longings بِتَأنيسيin my consolation
Your letter arrived, and my joy returned to me,
And I exchanged my overwhelming longings for solace.
وَلِلنّوىand separation has لَوعَةٌa burning ache تَطفوrises to the surface فَيطفئهاthen quenches it
مِسكُthe musk of المِدادِthe ink وَكافورُand the camphor of القَراطيسِthe sheets of paper
And separation has a burning ache that rises, then is quenched
By the musk of ink and the camphor of paper.
