أَرأَتhave ... seen? جُفونُكَyour eyelids مِثلَهُits like مِنof مَنظَرِa sight
ظِلٌّshade وَشَمسٌand sun مِثلُlike خَدِّthe cheek of مَعذّرِa youth with budding whiskers
Have your eyelids ever seen a sight like this?
Have your eyelids seen the like of it
Shade and sun, like the cheek of a youth with budding whiskers.
A scene with sun and shade like a coquette's cheek
وَجَداوِلٌand streams كَأَراقمٍlike speckled snakes حَصباؤهاtheir pebbles
كَبُطونِهاlike their bellies وَحَبابُهاand their bubbles كَالأَظهُرِlike the backs
And streams like speckled snakes, their pebbles
And brooks flowing between the rocks
Like their bellies, and their bubbles like their backs.
Like lines of writing, their ponds and bubbles brighter still
وَقَرارَةٍand a hollow كَالعَشرِlike milkweed (reading uncertain) ثَنيَwithin the fold of خَميلَةٍa leafy thicket
سالَتflowed مَذانِبُهاits rivulets بِهاthrough it كَالأَسطُرِlike lines of script
And a hollow like milkweed, within a thicket's fold,
With a meadow bending like a maiden's waist
Its rivulets flowed through it like lines of script.
Whose sides flowed forth like lines of prose
فَكَأَنَّهاso it seems مَشكولَةٌvowel-marked بِمصندلٍwith sandalwood-dyed color

So it seems vowel-marked in sandalwood hues,
As though it were garlanded with a many-colored wreath
From flowers in full bloom, or in safflower hues.
Of blooming flowers or saffron powder

A hope we attained on a garden's heights,
A hope we attained on a hillside garden
Which the two hands of rain-bearing clouds have embroidered.
Embroidered by the hands of the raining clouds
فَكَأَنَّهُso it seems وَالزَهرُand the flowers تاجٌa crown فَوقَهُabove it

So it seems—with flowers a crown above it—
So that it and its flowers were like a crown above it
A king revealed upon a green carpet.
A king revealed on a green carpet

Its lovely view delighted the gazing eyes,
From it the gazers delighted in a delightful scene
Portraying the freshness of al-Kawthar's gardens.
Describing freshness from the gardens of paradise

How often it drew the mind of a hurrying passerby,
How often it led one thought to another
And how many a beholder its beauty stirred!
And how often its beauty aroused the viewer

عَرِّجturn aside بِمُنعرجِat the bend of الكَثيبِthe sand dune الأَعفرِtawny
Had it shone before me amid what unfolded, I would not have said:
Had it not appeared to me among those spectacles
“Turn aside at the bend of the tawny sand dune.”
I would not have said, "Turn up the blond hill!"
