مَثَلُlikeness of الرِّزقِthe sustenance الَّذيthat تَطلُبهُyou seek it
مَثَلُ الرِّزقِ الَّذي تَطلُبهُ
مَثَلُlikeness of الظِّلِّthe shadow الَّذيthat يَمْشِيwalks مَعَكْwith you
مَثَلُ الظِّلِّ الَّذي يَمْشِي مَعَكْ
The likeness of the sustenance you seek
The livelihood you seek
is that of the shadow that walks with you.
Is like a shadow that walks with you.
أَنَْتyou لَاnot تُدْرِكُهُyou catch it مُتَّبِعًاwhile following
أَنَْت لَا تُدْرِكُهُ مُتَّبِعًا
فَإِذاbut when وَلَّيْتَyou turn away عَنْهُfrom it تَبِعَكْit follows you
فَإِذا وَلَّيْتَ عَنْهُ تَبِعَكْ
You cannot catch it by following it;
You cannot grasp it by pursuing,
but when you turn away from it, it follows you.
Yet turn away, and it will follow you.
