And seek forgiveness from Allah, Lord of mankind.

And gnash your teeth in remorse for what has passed,
Knock in regret on what your years have passed,
and quaff tears from cups.
And pour from cups of tears.

the fullest intimacy pleases your beloved.
Your Beloved is pleased with the utmost vigilance.

Do you sleep, heedless of one who does not withhold communion with him?
How can you sleep when nothing prevents His union?
You have erred by defying every standard.
You have erred by opposing all reason.

He who spends the night intoxicated with the nearness of his Beloved,
has eyelids untouched by drowsiness.
His eyelids will not be touched by drowsiness.

If your longing did not wane, you would not
If He had found you never faltering, you would not
forget a beloved whom you have not found forgetful.
Have forgotten a Beloved you did not find with people.

If only you felt the ecstasy in Him,
Have you not seen sickness as the finest garment?
If only you saw sickness as the best clothing.

Look to your soul before the time of its departure,
Look after yourself before your soul's departure,
and remember the scant companionship in your grave.
And remember in your grave the scarcity of companions.

O you who bestowed on us the precious gifts of guidance,
O You who guided us with the gifts of guidance,
and restored remembrance of the faith after neglect:
And revived the mention of religion after neglect.

My soul greeted you with a pouring greeting,
that reached you, its breaths precious.
And the most precious breath returned to you.

Through your blessings I hope for a prayer

From a believer, built on the foundation of success.

on behalf of a reckless mind, hard to rein,
From a restless mind, full of risky thoughts,
plagued by misgivings from its many sins,
From the great burdens of obsession and doubt.

And a mind inclined to evil, a mind
now dimmed, though once it had the brilliance of Iyas.
That has dimmed and fallen into hopelessness.

حَتّى أَلانَت كُلَّ قَلبٍ قاسِ
Your admonitions stirred hearts to eager longing,
Your sermons shook hearts longing
until they softened every hardened heart.
Until they softened every stubborn heart.

So heal them, after their straying, with guidance;
So quench them after misguidance with guidance,
you are their physician, and you are their healer.
You are the healer, and you are the comforter.
