لَمdid not يَبقَremain إِلّاexcept نَفَسٌa breath خافِتٍfaint
وَمُقلَةٌand an eye إِنسانُهاits pupil باهِتُdim
Nothing remains but a faint breath,
There remains but a faint breath
and an eye whose pupil is dim.
And a life whose flame is dim
بَلىindeed وَماand no فيin جِسمِهِhis body مَفصِلٌa joint

Indeed, there is no joint in his body
Indeed, and not one joint in his body
but harbors a persistent sickness.
But in it is a persisting pain
فَدَمعُهُso his tears يَجريflow وَأَحشاؤُهُand his entrails
توقَدُare set ablaze إِلّاexcept أَنَّهُthat he ساكِتُsilent
So his tears flow, and his entrails
His tears flow and his bowels
are ablaze, yet he is silent.
Burn, though he makes no moan
عَدُوُّهُhis enemy يَبكيweeps لَهُfor him رَحمَةًout of pity
وَحَسبُكُمand enough for you (plural) مِنas راحِمٍone who pities شامَتُone who gloats at misfortune
His enemy weeps for him out of pity,
His foe weeps for him in pity
and a gloating foe's pity is enough for you.
Yet this pitier is glad of his pain
