ليfor me إِلىto الريحِthe wind حاجَةٌa request لَوif قَضَتهاit granted it
كُنتُI would be لِلريحِto the wind ماas long as حَييتُI lived غُلاماa servant
I have a request of the wind: if it granted it,
I need the wind to fulfill my wish
I would be the wind’s servant for as long as I lived.
If it did, I'd be the wind's lad till I die
حَجَبوهاthey secluded her عَنِfrom الريحِthe wind لِأَنّيbecause I
قُلتُI said ياO ريحُwind بَلِّغيهاconvey to her السَلاماthe greeting of peace
They secluded her from the wind because I
They hid her from the wind, for I
Said, “O wind, convey my greeting of peace to her.”
Said "O wind, give her my regards"
لَوif رَضواthey were content بِالحِجابِwith seclusion هانَit would be bearable وَلَكِنand yet
مَنَعوهاthey forbade her يَومَon the day of الريحِthe wind الكَلاماspeech
Had they been content with seclusion, it would have been bearable; and yet
If they approved the veil, no problem
They forbade her to speak on windy days.
But they forbade her speech that day
فَتَنَفَّستُso I sighed ثُمَّthen قُلتُI said لِطَيفيto my phantom
وَيكَwoe to you إِنif زُرتَyou visit طَيفَهاher phantom إِلماماbriefly
So I sighed, then said to my phantom,
So I sighed, and told my phantom
“Woe to you! If you visit her phantom briefly,
"If you visit her phantom, do inform her"
حَيِّهاgreet her بِالسَلامِwith peace سِرّاًsecretly وَإِلّاand otherwise
مَنَعوهاthey will forbid her لِشَقوَتيto my misfortune أَنto تَناماsleep
Greet her with peace in secret; otherwise,
Greet her secretly with peace, or else
They will forbid her to sleep, to my misfortune.”
They'd forbid her, out of spite, her sleep
