رُبّ لَيلٍ أمَدَّ مِن نَفَسٍ العا
شِقِ-er (العاشق ends) طولاًin length قَطَعَتهُI passed it بِانتِخابِin choosing
شِقِ طولاً قَطَعَتهُ بِانتِخابِ
Many a night, longer than the breath of the lov-
Many a night whose breath dragged on
er, I spent in choosing;
I shortened its length by my pick of
وَحديثٍand a conversation ألَذُّsweeter مِنthan نَظَرِthe gaze of الواthe lov- (الوامق begins)
وَحديثٍ ألَذُّ مِن نَظَرِ الوا
مِقِ-er (الوامق ends) بُدِّلتُهُI was given it in exchange بِسوءِfor the harshness of العِتابِreproach
مِقِ بُدِّلتُهُ بِسوءِ العِتابِ
and many a conversation, sweeter than the gaze of the lov-
A sweeter-than-glances'-union talk
er, I was given in exchange for harsh reproach.
Exchanged it for reproach's blight
