وَعَنand after قَليلٍa short while يَعودُhe goes back فيon هِبَتِهhis gift
The more I ask of his bounty, the more he gives me;
He gives me whatever more I ask of his bounty,
yet before long, he takes back his gift.
and soon afterward takes back his gift.
لَوif حُزتُI possessed قَطرَthe rain السَماءِof heaven لَاِنهَمَلَتwould pour down
عَلَيَّupon me ظُلماًunjustly سَماءُthe sky مَوجِدَتِهof his wrath
Had I possessed heaven’s rain, down would pour
If I possessed the rain of heaven, down would pour
upon me, unjustly, the sky of his wrath.
upon me, unjustly, the sky of his wrath.
كَمhow many زَلَّةٍa lapse مِنهُof his قَدindeed ظَفِرتُI seized بِهاupon it
فَقامَso rose حُبّيmy love لَهُfor him بِمَعذِرَتِهin his defense
How many a fault of his I have caught him in—
Many a lapse of his have I seized upon,
yet my love for him rose to plead his excuse.
so my love for him rose in his defense.

The nights pass away, and so does his threat, while I
The nights wear away his threats, while I
am newly acquainted with the harshness of his rule.
have lately known the harshness of his rule.
