The most consuming anguish is that which makes the eyes weep,
The tears that stream from my eyes reveal the grief inside
And the most healing tears are those that reopen the eyelids' wounds.
And the weeping soothes what bile has the eyelids corroded
فياso, O ابنson of الأربعينforty اركبْboard سفيناa ship
مِنَof التقوىpiety فقدfor indeed عُمّرتyou have been given life حيناfor a while
So, O man of forty, board a ship
So O son of forty, a ship you must ride
Of piety, for you have been granted life awhile.
Of piety, since for a time it has abided
ونحْand mourn إنif كنتَyou are منamong أصحابthe companions of نوحٍNoah
لكيso that تنجوyou may be saved نجاةthe salvation of الأربعيناthe forty
And mourn, if you are among Noah's companions,
And if you be from Noah's fellows, bend aside
So that you may be saved as the forty were saved.
That you may live, with safety the forty provided
بداappeared للشيبُof gray hair فيon فودْيكyour two temples رقمٌa mark
فياso, O أهلَpeople of الرقيمal-Raqim أتسمعوناdo you hear?
A mark of gray hair has appeared upon your temples;
For grey hairs on your temples a number have inscribed
So, O people of al-Raqim, do you hear?
So O folk of the numbered, can you hear me decided
لأنتمُindeed you أهلpeople of كهفٍa cave قدhave ضربناwe laid a seal

Indeed, you are people of a cave: 'We have laid a seal
You're cave-folk, on whom for years was precluded
Upon their ears within it for years.'
All hearing, so strongly your ears we have chided
رأيتُI saw الشيبَgray hair يجريspreading فيthrough سوادٍblackness
بياضاًas whiteness لاnot كعقلlike the intellect of الكاتبيناthe scribes
I saw gray hair spreading through blackness
I've seen grey hairs run through the blackness reside
As whiteness, unlike the thinking of scribes.
Whiteness not like thought in a writer's hand guided
وقدand may يجريspread السوادblackness علىover بياضٍwhiteness
فكانso was الحسنُbeauty فيهin it مستبيناclearly apparent
And blackness may spread over whiteness,
And blackness can run upon whiteness collide
And beauty was clearly apparent in it.
So beauty in it became clear and divided
فهذاso this العكسُinversion يؤذنgives notice بانعكاسِof a reversal
وقدand indeed أشعرتُمُyou have been alerted لوif only تشعروناyou perceive
So this inversion gives notice of a reversal,
This reverse is a sign of all being turned over
And you have been alerted, if only you would perceive.
I made you feel this, if you feelings decided
نباتٌvegetation هاجwithered ثمthen يُرىis seen حطاماas dry debris
وهذاand this اللحظsight قدhas شملَencompassed العيوناthe eyes
Vegetation withers, then is seen as dry debris,
Plants bloomed but soon ruined fragments discover
And this sight has reached every eye.
And this moment has over the eyes presided

A naked warner has come running to you,
A warner came naked, running them over
While you laugh and play.
While you laugh and play, to advice prepended
أُخَيَّmy dear brother إلىuntil متىwhen هذاthis التصابيfeigning youth
جننتَyou went mad بهذهover this الدنياworld جنوناutter madness
My dear brother, how long this pretense of youth?
My brother, how long can this distraction sever?
You have gone mad over this world, utterly mad.
You're mad with desire for this life decided
هيَit is الدنياthe world وإنand even if وصلتit kept ties وبرتand was kind
فكمfor how often قطعتit severed ties وكمand how often تركتit left بنيناsons
Such is the world, even when it keeps ties and is kind:
And though it draws near and kindnesses tender
For how often it has severed ties, and how often left sons behind!
How many sons left, how many defended!
فلاso do not تخدعكdeceive you أيامdays تليهاfollow them
ليالٍnights واخشهاand fear them بيضاًwhite وجوناand dark
So do not be deceived by days that are followed
Don't let days that come after trick or surrender
By nights; fear them, white and dark alike.
Fear their nights, both dark and whey-faced limited

تعيدُturns back حراكَthe motion of ساكنهاits dweller سكوناinto stillness
For that, if you look, is the world's weapon:
For when you look, the arms of this world fender
It turns its dweller's motion back to stillness.
Silent places rousing, movement provided
وَبينَand between يديكَyour two hands يومٌa day أيُّwhat a يومٍday

And before you lies a day—what a day!
Before you, a day - O what a day tender!
On it, the Lord of mankind will surely judge you.
When God all mankind's debts will have divided

وإماor else دارan abode of هُونhumiliation لنwill never يهوناease
Then either an abode of glory that never perishes,
Either mansion of glory, nothing to end there
Or an abode of humiliation that will never ease.
Or abode of disgrace, ever diminished
فطوبىso bliss فيon غدٍthe morrow للمتقيناfor the God-fearing
وويلٌand woe فيon غدٍthe morrow للمجرميناfor the evildoers
So bliss awaits the God-fearing tomorrow,
Joy in the next day to the pious defenders!
And woe awaits the evildoers tomorrow!
But woe to the sinners, of crimes convicted!
وآهٍand alas ثمthen آهٍalas ثمthen آهٍalas

And alas, then alas, then alas,
Ah! Ah! And Ah! I cry without pretender
For my own soul—I repeat it hundreds of times.
For my own soul, countless times afflicted

ألاah ياoh ليتنيif only I were فيamong السامعيناthose who listen

My brother, have you heard this admonition or not?
My brother, did you hear this advice I render?
Ah, if only I were among those who listen!
Would that with hearers I were listed!
إذاif ماindeed الوعظُadmonition لمnot يُوردis delivered بصدقwith sincerity

If indeed admonition is not delivered sincerely,
If advice brings not sincerity so tender
Then no loss is like the preachers' loss.
None lose like the advisers conflicted
