O seeker of worldly life, you have sought delusion,

and accepted falsehood from those beauties.

Your worldly life is either temptation or ordeal,

and I see you overpowered in both.

And I see the years pass swiftly by you,

till I truly think they have become months.

Even as it shows you crescents on its horizon,

you behold them just afterward as full moons.

    They were bows, then became circles;

they must shoot at humankind and revolve.

Darkness comes, and scarcely blackens a page

before it sees its writing scattered.

Then, when morning comes and spreads its cloak,

evening shakes out its outspread cloak.

They alternate over you: this one spreads

musk, and this one spreads camphor.

Musk and camphor are but what you see

of restraint and glorification in your conduct.

From their two colors, on your two temples now lies

a mark that inflicts gloom and weakness.

How long will you not desist—and till when?

Or have you not found in gray hair a warning?

I fear for you because of sins, for perhaps

you will find what is small among sins to be great.

So look to yourself; I am a sincere adviser to you.

And seek the Lord's forgiveness; you will find Him ever-forgiving.

Before your repose, for which you will lay

your humbled cheek upon the dust, abased.

And terror, then terror, on the day when

you find what you sent ahead written down.
