صحبتُ في عمري ناساً أولي حسَب
حازواthey earned الثناءَpraise بموروثthrough inherited qualities ومطبوعِand innate qualities
حازوا الثناءَ بموروث ومطبوعِ
In my lifetime, I kept company with people of noble standing,
In my life, I have known people of high lineage,
who earned praise through inherited and innate qualities.
Who gained praise through inheritance and nature.
فلمْyet … not أجدْI found فاضلاًa man of excellence فيمنamong those whom صحبتُI kept company with سوىexcept
فلمْ أجدْ فاضلاً فيمن صحبتُ سوى
محمدِMuhammad بنson of أبيAbī (father of) العيشal-ʿAysh بنِson of يربوعِYarbūʿ
محمدِ بن أبي العيش بنِ يربوعِ
Yet among those I kept company with, I found no man of excellence except
Yet of all those I have known, I found none nobler
Muhammad ibn Abī al-ʿAysh ibn Yarbūʿ.
