هوhe الحبيبُthe beloved قضىhe judged بالجوْرِwith injustice أمْor عدلاhe acted justly
ليfor me الخيارُthe choice وأماand as for فيin هواهlove for him فلاthen no
He is the beloved, whether he judges unjustly or fairly.
Is he the beloved who wronged or was just?
I have a choice—but in loving him, none.
I have the choice, but in his love, no.
تاللّهby God ماnot قصّرfell short العذَّالthe reproachers فيin عَذَليreproaching me
لكنَّbut أذنيmy ear أبتrefused أنto تسمعhear العذلاreproach
By God, the reproachers spared no effort in reproaching me,
By God, the blamer did not fall short in blaming me
but my ear refused to hear their reproach.
But my ear refused to hear the blame
أماas for السلوُّceasing to love فشيءُّthen something لستُI do not أعرفهُknow it
كفىit is enough بخلّكin your friend غدْراًas betrayal أنthat يقالit be said سلاhe ceased to love
As for ceasing to love, it is something I do not know.
As for prudence, it's something I don't know
It is betrayal enough in your friend that people say, 'He has ceased to love.'
Suffice that your treachery be called prudence

Another's eyelids have cleared after they dripped,
The eyelids of others woke after they dripped
and another's heart has sobered after it was drunk.
And the heart of others sobered after they became drunk

And a bān-tree branch that swayed at its joints—
A bough bent from his robes
I watered it with tears until it bore reproach.
I watered it with tears until it bore fruit of blame

فكلّماso whenever مالَit leaned منfrom أعطافهits sides اعتدلاit straightened
In its wake, the breeze of poetry comes now and then;
The breeze of poetry followed it for a while
so whenever it leaned at its sides, it straightened.
Whenever it swayed from its sides it became upright
أمّلتI hoped والهمةُwhile aspiration العلياءlofty طامحةsoaring
وليسَand there is not فيamong الناسpeople إلاexcept آملone who hopes أملاa hope
I hoped, while lofty aspiration soared,
I wished and my great ambition aspired
and among people there is none who does not cherish a hope.
But among the people there is only a hopeful, wishing

And he said, 'Enough! An intruder making demands!'
And Tufayl said oh my little slave and suggested
'Are you not my slave and my possession?' So I said, 'Yes.'
Am I not your slave and owned? So I said yes
ماnot منone who تحدثhas spoken عنof حسنيmy beauty وعنand of كلفيmy infatuation
بحسنهwith his beauty وبحبيand with my love فاضربthen give المثلاthe example
No one has spoken of my beauty and my infatuation [wording unclear];
No one spoke of my beauty and charm
then cite his beauty and my love as your example.
With his beauty and my love, so take the examples

إذاwhen أشارhe signaled بأدنىwith the slightest لحظهhis glance قتلاhe killed
I drew water from my cheek, fearing arrest by a king [verb uncertain],
I slapped my cheek fearing being seized by the King
who kills whenever he signals with his slightest glance.
If he gestured with the slightest look to kill

إذاwhen تجلّىhe revealed himself بظهرbehind الغيبthe unseen واتصلاand he united
My limbs kiss the ground and serve him
The land accepts my limbs and serves him
when he appears in the unseen and unites with me.
When he appears from behind the unseen and joins
ياO مَنْyou who لهto whom belongs دولةٌa dominion فيin الحسنbeauty باهرةdazzling

O you whose dominion in beauty is dazzling,
Oh you whose rule of beauty is brilliant
one like me, and a heart like mine, serve ruling powers.
Like me and my heart that serves the rule
