والوجدُ جرّده وصبري مزّقا
He captured my heart and set my eye's tears free.
My heart is captive and my teardrops unleashed
And longing stripped it bare and tore my patience apart.
Passion has stripped it bare, my patience torn to shreds

مُتنعّم قد لذّ لي فيه الشقا
Sweet in his ways—how bitter his rejection!
The sweet faced one passed by, uncaring,
A pampered one: suffering for him has grown sweet to me.
While I indulged in the agony his charm evokes

عن عين عاشقه فبات مؤرقا
He sent passion toward slumber, then drove it away
Love dispatched a dream, but it did not relieve
From his lover's eye, leaving him sleepless through the night.
The sleepless longing in the lover’s eyes

If I say, 'I have no strength to bear such injustice,'
If I confess I’ve no strength to be patient
He turns away and shuts patience's door against me.
He turns away, slamming shut hope’s door

A gazelle of the Turks, he shies away for fear
He is a gazelle, a Turk, shying from company
Of being caught in a snare of love.
Lest in love he be tied to another

His lineage is confirmed if you investigate
Turkish in his gaze, Arab in his speech.
The Turks in glance, Arabs in eloquence

He tossed his braid behind him, and I thought it
He threw off his cloak, which I mistook
A serpent clinging to a branch of an arak tree.
For a branch of Arak clinging to his back

It reaches the stirrup when he appears mounted;
It joins his feet when he poses as a rider
Then, when he dismounts, he gathers it round him as a belt.
But when he dismounts, he wraps it around his waist

It grew long and darker, so I imagined it
The night of rejection, yet I never ceased to cling.
The night of his hair, and I remained ensnared

Beauty's water coursed through his cheeks;
His beauty is a flowing stream, coursing through his cheeks
How many an eye's pupil he has drowned in it!
In which many a soul has drowned

He rises with his radiance above the moon
And with his supple figure, above the bough of the sand dune.
And with his soft gait above the swaying boughs

When he speaks or smiles, his mouth
He does not let one who has forgotten love remain unloving.
Leaves not a soul that does not fall in love

And in his mouth is the clear water of life.
While from his lips, the water of life flows cool

Can I quench it? I pour till I steal a sip

O my reproacher, desist and repent of what is past.
Oh, reproacher! Make amends for what has passed
You do not succeed in doing justice to the lover.
You do not fairly love if you deny this

I have said to myself: 'One like him will make you forget him.'
You told me to seek out one like him, but
And that was true, but his like is not to be found.
One like him cannot be found, it’s true

O languid-lidded one, you have scorched the heart
Languid-eyed one, you scorched my thoughts,
Within me, so I melted in ardent love and longing.
And I melted like ice, consumed with yearning

Time passes, and I do not visit your dwellings,
Time passes, and I do not visit your abode
Because of the many watchers at the meeting place.
For at the meeting place, spies abound

Yet I fear I may drown from the weakness love brings.

I fear it might blow toward you as a scorching flame.
I dread it blowing a consuming fire to you

As for my love for you, it lives
Alive; and yet, as for forgetting you—may you outlive it.
But in forgetting, you hold sway
