God has borne witness; and you, O earth, bear witness

that we answered the cry of the one seeking help.

When the caller called and repeated his voice,

we rose to aid him and did not hesitate.

We ride by night to him with spearheads already stripped

of their sharpness, while dawn has not yet bared itself.

And the meteors above the dust are swifter in motion

than those above the clouds, toward the goal.

Were it not for the spearheads and the hooves, no one

in Farqad would have known of the torrent of our horses.

Until, when the midmorning sun revealed us

to the eye, we vanished into the ashen scene.

The horses complain of us, though our only fault is

that we ride them in the evening and in the morning.

If they knew the purpose of our journey,

they would fly with us and never hesitate.

God knows that we have intended nothing

but jihad and the championing of Muhammad's faith.

Then the sea barred our way, as though it were

a king advancing with armies to an ambush post.

    هيهات ما الماء الأجاج بموردِ

    So the thirsty horses hurled themselves forward to drink from it;

far from it! Bitter salt water is no watering place.

O horses, beyond us lies water that quenches thirst,

and drinking places and fields not yet harvested,

and loved ones among the foes, who now

expect death unless you come to their aid.

Among them is one shedding tears, yet

    his eyelids' tears flow for a captive;

and one bereaved, who takes no pleasure in food,

and one terrified, who cannot rest in bed.

Our brothers in our faith and our affection,

and theirs is an added measure of love and tenderness.

We travel by night on falcons' wings toward the foes,

like doves circling as they come to water.

And they faced the Sea of al-Zuqaq with a band

whose resolve took effect and did not split into many aims.

They rejoiced at our rising on their horizon,

like the sun on the day it rises for the most fortunate.

    إن الحوادث لا تجيءُ بموعدِ

    Until we roused the people in their homelands;

events do not arrive by appointment.

Then we met those who had cried for help

from us, with every supported and rightly guided warrior.

Until, when we came and they came toward us,

the meeting place drew near, and distance was told, 'Be gone!'

Their side turned away, and they grew stern, after

spreading hopes before us like one smoothing a path.

Did they not see that we had left our land,

though there we possess a kingship of honored descent?

And a numerous host obeyed us and hastened forth,

some of them provisioned, and others unprovisioned.

Do you think, if they return to their homelands,

that a place for a mosque will remain for you on earth?

Or do you suppose that lightning flashes rising for you—

the likes of us, never known before in your sky—

sprang forth through your spears and were rained down from them?

Rather, this came from us, even though we were not present.

We intended, if we frightened our people

concerning you, that whoever had gone would return in greater numbers,

until you saw your lands flourishing,

and your today fell short of your tomorrow.

But today you have estranged us with such estrangement

that, if its cords have not been stretched, it is as though they have.

If only I knew what you had seen from us,

that you began with the farthest place!

By God, but for our love for you—and what

could make you grasp age-old love worn like a necklace?—

and our fear that your enemy might grow overbearing

and rise after humiliation and subjection,

I would have left this affliction with those beside me,

and left it to you, taking no further care.

Did you not know that we are helping hands for you

against the foes—and God is the best supporter?

Were it not for men of Marin who lifted

you up, you would have been in the lowest depths.

Were it not for men of Marin who fought

on your behalf, you would have been like bashful maidens.

I remember your troops, who, when they see

a foreign infidel, flee like scattered ostriches.

They imitate every lurking, uncircumcised man

in their dress and their speech in public,

and their food, their habits, and their drink,

and the shameful acts they commit amid the assembly,

and their disparagement of scholars, the virtuous, and the

notables among the people of piety and eminence.

How can they be guided, when whoever does not follow

his Prophet and his imam has not found guidance?

    إن الوداد كعهده لم ينفدِ

    This is reproach, with no severing of ties;

affection remains as before and has not run out.

So come, with your honor, to what we have

for you by right, and listen to a guide.

Then peace be upon you, from a father

who calls his son with the call of one who loves and helps.
