محمدMuhammad الممدوحthe one praised بالشعرin verse فاعلمso know
محمد الممدوح بالشعر فاعلم
وصلِّand invoke blessings علىupon هذاthis النبيProphet وسلّمand invoke peace
وصلِّ على هذا النبي وسلّم
Muhammad is the one praised in verse—know this,
and invoke blessings and peace upon this Prophet.
محبتُهlove for him تتلوfollows محبةَlove for ربِّهhis Lord
محبتُه تتلو محبةَ ربِّه
وكلتاهماand both of them نورٌa light علىfor كلِّevery مسلمMuslim
وكلتاهما نورٌ على كلِّ مسلم
Love for him follows love for his Lord,
and both are a light for every Muslim.
محاeffaced حبّlove for مولاناour Lord وحبُّand love for حبيبهHis beloved
محا حبّ مولانا وحبُّ حبيبه
هوىdesire كلِّevery قلبheart بالصبابةwith ardent longing مُعلمmarked
هوى كلِّ قلب بالصبابة مُعلم
Love for our Lord and love for His beloved have effaced
the desires of every heart marked by ardent longing.
محاسنُthe excellences of هذاthis المصطفىChosen One فاقتِsurpassed الورىall humankind
محاسنُ هذا المصطفى فاقتِ الورى
فليسَso there is none لهاfor them فيon الأرضthe earth غيرother than مُسلّمone who acknowledges
فليسَ لها في الأرض غير مُسلّم
The excellences of this Chosen One surpass all humankind,
so everyone on earth acknowledges them.
محامدُهhis praiseworthy qualities لاnot يستقلُّcan manage alone بحصرهاto enumerate them fully
محامدُه لا يستقلُّ بحصرها
لسانُthe tongue of خطيبan orator مصْقعeloquent متكلمwell-spoken
لسانُ خطيب مصْقع متكلم
His praiseworthy qualities cannot be fully enumerated
by an eloquent, well-spoken orator’s tongue alone.
محاملُهhis conveyances للعلمfor knowledge والفضلِand virtue والندىand bounty
محاملُه للعلم والفضلِ والندى
فمنْso some are مجتدٍa seeker of bounty أوor مقتدٍa follower متعلمa learner
فمنْ مجتدٍ أو مقتدٍ متعلم
His conveyances serve knowledge, virtue, and bounty,
so some seek bounty, while others follow and learn.
محلّa station شريفnoble رفّعexalted اللهGod قدرهhis rank
محلّ شريف رفّع الله قدره
بذيthrough a wielder of قلمa pen أوor ذيa wielder of حسامa sharp sword مُقلّمsevering
بذي قلم أو ذي حسام مُقلّم
His station is noble; God has exalted his rank
through a bearer of the pen or a wielder of a severing sword.
محامa defender عنof الإسلامIslam للحقfor the truth ناصرa champion
محام عن الإسلام للحق ناصر
فماso not كانthere was فيin الإسلامIslam منany متظلّمone complaining of injustice
فما كان في الإسلام من متظلّم
A defender of Islam, a champion of truth,
so no one within Islam complained of injustice.
مُحيّاهhis countenance أحياrevived بالحياwith rain كلَّevery مجدبbarren place
مُحيّاه أحيا بالحيا كلَّ مجدب
وجلَّىand illuminated بأنوارwith the lights of الهدىguidance كلّevery مظلمdark place
وجلَّى بأنوار الهدى كلّ مظلم
His countenance brought every barren place to life with rain,
and lit every dark place with the lights of guidance.
محابرُناour inkwells كَمْhow much حبَّرتْfinely penned منof ثنائهpraise of him
محابرُنا كَمْ حبَّرتْ من ثنائه
وماyet not عبّرتhave conveyed إذfor كلُّall ماthat فيهis in him معلمa distinguishing sign
وما عبّرت إذ كلُّ ما فيه معلم
How much praise of him our inkwells have finely penned!
Yet they have not fully conveyed it, for everything in him is a sign.
