Ahmad is the quintessence of the prophets' lineages.
The proofs of this stand firm for the discerning.

وطابتْand grew pure حلالencampments حلَّهاhe inhabited them وحلائلُand wives
Milch camels grew pure through the sire's purity, and bore noble offspring;
And pure were the encampments he inhabited, and the wives.
لبانةُthe desire of نفسيmy soul وهيand it is خيرُthe best of وسائليmy means of approach
زيارتُهvisiting him إنيindeed I لتلكfor that لسائلsurely ask
My soul's desire—and it is the best of my means of approach—
Is to visit him; indeed, that is what I ask.

I lingered, and my lingering was idleness,
In my season of leisure; then calamities overtook me.

وطالَand grew long المدىthe distance فالفكرُso thought لاnot الخطوwalking جائلroaming
My tongue has ample scope; only my steps are constrained.
And the distance grew long; thought, not footsteps, roams.

ولاand no بؤسmisery إلاexcept أنthat حدِّيmy edge زائلfading
My garb—the garb of time—is patience I gather about me;
And there is no misery save that my edge is fading.

You confused matters for me, O soul, in youth;
Then, when dawn grew cruel, sand ridges loomed.

Wise, by my life, is he who knew in his youth
That the season of gray hair and weakness comes in its turn.

If the deftness of my verse lives up to my aims,
Then in it are means of approach to the best of servants.

I am Labid in verse and years; and this and that
Will perish, but I incline toward grace.
