في الصدر من عهد الحبيب علائق

ومثيرها نظر وطيف طارق

ومثيرها نظر وطيف طارق

Within my breast linger bonds from the beloved’s pledge;

In my chest are bonds from the days of my beloved

A glance and a night-visiting phantom stir them.

And what stirs them is a glance and a visiting apparition

فالطيف إن أغفيت يوماً هائج

فالطيف إن أغفيت يوماً هائج

والطرف إن أصغيت يوماً شائق

والطرف إن أصغيت يوماً شائق

So the phantom, if ever I doze, stirs my longing;

So the apparition, if I sleep one day, excites

And the gaze, if ever I give heed, awakens desire.

And the glance, if I listen one day, allures

يا منكر الأشواق لست بعاشق

يا منكر الأشواق لست بعاشق

ما يعرف الأشواق إلا العاشق

ما يعرف الأشواق إلا العاشق

O denier of longing, you are no lover;

O you who deny passions, you are no lover

Only a lover knows longing—

Only a lover knows passions

ممن له نَفَسٌ كمثلي خافت

ممن له نَفَسٌ كمثلي خافت

أو من له قلب كمثلي خافق

أو من له قلب كمثلي خافق

One of those whose breath, like mine, is faint,

One who has a soul like mine, faint

Or whose heart, like mine, is throbbing.

Or one who has a heart like mine, fluttering

ما بين أضلعه حبيب قاطن

ما بين أضلعه حبيب قاطن

يثني بموضعه وحبُّ ناطق

يثني بموضعه وحبُّ ناطق

Within his ribs dwell a beloved,

Between his ribs resides a beloved

Who praises his abode, and a love that speaks.

Who makes him incline to his place, and a love speaking

إن يذكر السلوان قال خطيبه

إن يذكر السلوان قال خطيبه

عند المحبّة يوم يسلو آبق

عند المحبّة يوم يسلو آبق

If forgetting is mentioned, its spokesman says:

If he recalls the night visitors, his lover said

“In Love’s eyes, he is a runaway slave the day he forgets.”

In love, on the day he inclines, a fugitive

كيف السلو عن الذي أهوى و

كيف السلو عن الذي أهوى و

في عنقي عهود للهوى ومواثق

في عنقي عهود للهوى ومواثق

How can I forget the one I love, while

How can there be inclination from the one I love when

Around my neck are pledges to love and covenants?

Around my neck are pacts to love and covenants

زعم الحبيب بأن دمعي كاذب

زعم الحبيب بأن دمعي كاذب

والله يعلم أن دمعي صادق

والله يعلم أن دمعي صادق

The beloved claimed my tears were false,

My beloved claimed that my tear is a liar

And God knows my tears are true.

And Allah knows that my tear is truthful

من ذا يسابق لوعتي أو زفرتي

من ذا يسابق لوعتي أو زفرتي

وكلاهما عند التذكر سابق

وكلاهما عند التذكر سابق

Who can outpace my anguish or my sigh,

Who can compete with my anguish or my sighs

When both take the lead at remembrance?

Both, when remembered, are early starters
