وشوقُكand your longing أمْor سقطa spark وجسمُكand your body أمْor خطُa line
وشوقُك أمْ سقط وجسمُك أمْ خطُ
Are those your tears or a pearl-strand, and your heart or an earring?
Are your tears a downpour or is your heart hardened?
And is that your longing or a spark, and your body or a line?
Is your longing fallen or is your body erect?

Is it a bashful maiden, drawing you back to youthful passion after renunciation,
After plucking, fingers on the lute
though gray hair marks your sideburn with a volley—or a line?
And for old age, there is moisture in your freshness, or is it engraved?

Ah, no! Rather, a holy breath—
Alas! But a sanctified breath
I smell in it the soil of Paradise, and bow down.
I smell the soil of Paradise thus I landed

I saw a likeness of the sandal—the sandal of Muhammad—
I saw the image of the sandal, the sandal of Muhammad
and I swayed, with no wine but what recalled him.
So I inclined and I have none but his memory as my carpet

I tore the veil of the seven heavens away from his face's beauty,
I tore the veil of the seven from the beauty of his face
and beheld him stepping at the Lote Tree of the Utmost Boundary.
I saw him in the Lote Tree of the Endpoint walking

I saw a likeness: were it seen as I saw it
I saw an image, if seen as I saw it
by the stars of darkness, while night was black and streaked with white,
The stars of nightfall and the jet-black night would be combed

it would delight the Pleiades to be a foot; it would not
It is the secret of the Pleiades that it is a foot but
delight the Pleiades to be an earring forever.
It is not the secret of the Pleiades that it is ever a necklace

Ah, may my father be that likeness's ransom, for it is
Lo! By the father of that image, for it is
a beloved's image, and the image has its share.
The apparition of the beloved, and for the apparition there is a portion

For if it is not the sandal, or the sandal is not it, it is
If it is not it or resembles it, then it is
its brother in symmetry, as even as a comb.
Its brother in moderation, like the comb is moderated

فألثمه حتى أقول سينغط
I deem kissing it sufficient, like ablution with earth,
I see its kissing like ablution, rewarding
so I kiss it until I say, 'It will be submerged!'
So I kiss it until I say, be adorned

And it is nothing but burning anguish and passionate longing,
It is nothing but a burning and passion
with its share in my heart, and a pearl-strand in my tearful eye.
In my heart it has a portion and in my tears a downpour

I cast sleep into tears, and patience into grief,
I cast distress into tears and patience into anguish
and how could it be quenched, when distance kindles it?
Alas! That it will not be extinguished while its kindling is ablaze

It will be extinguished on the Day of Resurrection
at the Pool, with the thirst-quenching cup, as I reach to take it.
At the Basin, when given the cup to drink

A sinful servant has taken liberties, yet he
A sinful servant spreads out, though he
loves God's Messenger; such freedom is justified for him.
Loves the Messenger of Allah, rightly for him is the carpet

May God's peace be upon him as long as a cloud appears,
Upon him is Allah's peace, no critic argued
and its lightning flashes, and its raindrops pour.
Nor for him did lightning flash or dots drizzle
