والأرضُand the earth قدindeed ضربتْwas struck بمرهفِwith the keen blade of نهرهاits river
والأرضُ قد ضربتْ بمرهفِ نهرها
صفحاًflatwise وألقىand it cast itself down فيin المكانthe place فصاحاthen it cried out
صفحاً وألقى في المكان فصاحا
And the earth has been struck with its river’s keen blade,
The earth struck with the keen edge of her river
flatwise; it cast itself down there and cried out.
A page, and cast in space a clamor.
فاسمعso listen إلىto غربِهits sharp edge فيamong حصبائهits pebbles
فاسمع إلى غربِه في حصبائه
كالقيْنlike the blacksmith جرَّdragged علىacross الفلاةِthe wilderness سلاحاa weapon
كالقيْن جرَّ على الفلاةِ سلاحا
So listen to its edge among its pebbles,
So harken to her weeping in her pebbles
like a blacksmith who dragged a weapon across the wilderness.
Like a lute trailing over the wilderness a chant.
