وبيداءand a wilderness قدalready; indeed كانتhad been ضلوعاًribs تُكننيsheltering me
كأنيas though I فيهاwithin it لوعةٌa burning ache ووجيبُand a heartbeat
And a wilderness that had been ribs sheltering me,
The desert that once sheltered me
As though within it I were a burning ache and a heartbeat.
Now causes me torment and grief
وتحتand beneath قميصthe shirt of الليلnight منيfrom me مجمّرan incense brazier
وفوقand above رداءِthe cloak of الصبحdawn منيfrom me طيبُfragrance
And beneath night's shirt is an incense brazier from me,
Beneath the shirt of night I smolder
And above dawn's cloak is fragrance from me.
Above the cloak of dawn, a perfume
وفيand in مُقْلةthe eye of الظلماءِdarkness منيfrom me مرودa kohl-stick
لهit has بينَbetween أهدابِthe eyelashes of السحابِthe clouds دبيبُa creeping movement
And in darkness's eye is a kohl-stick from me,
In the tears of darkness, I roar
Which creeps between the clouds' eyelashes.
With a murmur between the clouds' folds
وفيand in مبسمthe smiling mouth of الإصباحِdaybreak مسواكُa tooth-cleaning twig of أسحلٍan asḥal tree
ولكنّهbut it مهماhowever much عجنتI kneaded (reading uncertain) طبيبُa healer
And in daybreak's smiling mouth is a tooth-stick of asḥal wood,
In the smile of dawn, a toothstick I use
But it is a healer, however much I knead [wording unclear].
But no matter how much it's chewed, it stays bitter
فيغضيso it lowers its eyelids عليَّover me الليلُnight والليلُand night أدعجdeeply dark-eyed
ويَبْسمُand it smiles عنيrevealing me الصبحُdawn وهوwhile it is شنيبُcool, sweet-toothed
So night lowers its eyelids over me, and night is dark-eyed,
Night frowns at me, growing darker
And dawn smiles, revealing me, its teeth cool and sweet.
Dawn smiles at me, still unripe
