محاسنَgraces أزرتْbrought shame بالشموسupon the suns اللوائحِshining
God endowed Muhammad, the best of all creation,
Allah loved Muhammad, the best of all beings
with graces that put the shining suns to shame.
His virtues were adorned with radiant suns
حمىa sanctuary عظمتwas exalted قدراًin worth وطابتْand was sweet روائحاًin fragrance
فجادَand may it lavish rain upon ثراهُits soil كلُّevery غادٍa morning cloud ورائحِand an evening cloud
A sanctuary exalted in worth and sweet in fragrance—
His greatness grew, and his fragrance was sweet
and may every morning and evening cloud lavish rain upon its soil.
So his abundance flowed for every comer and goer
حباknee-binding bands المجدof glory والعلياand high honor تَحلُّcome loose لذكرهat his mention
إذاwhen سطعتrose أرواحbreaths تلكthose الروائحfragrances
The bands of glory and high honor loosen at his mention,
The glory and supremacy befit the mention of him
when the breaths of those fragrances rise.
When the spirits of those fragances shine
حبيبٌa beloved one حباهendowed him اللهُGod كلَّevery كرامةhonor

A beloved one, whom God endowed with every honor,
A beloved one whom Allah granted all nobility
and strengthened with genuine miracles.
And supported with clear miracles
حبيسٌdevoted عليهto him نظمthe composing of شعريmy poetry دائماًalways
ونثرُand the scattering of دموعيmy tears مُنشداًwhile chanting للمدائحpraises
The verse I compose is forever devoted to him,
My poetry verses are always imprisoned for him
and the scattering of my tears, as I chant praises.
And the prose of my tears reciting eulogies
حبوريmy joy فيin تحبيرهاembellishing them بقريحةwith a poetic gift
إذاwhen سوجلتwas challenged in rivalry كانتْit was أجمَّthe most abundant of القرائحpoetic gifts
My joy lies in adorning them with a poetic gift
My talents are confused in eulogizing him
that, when challenged, proves the most fertile of poetic gifts.
When I try my best, they are the most eloquent writings
حبالُthe cords of رجائيmy hope فيin عُلاهhis exalted rank قويةٌstrong
ومنand whoever يرجُhopes in ذاone possessing فضلbounty فليسَthen he is not بطائحone who falls
The cords of my hope in his exalted rank are strong,
The ropes of my hope in his supremacy are strong
and whoever hopes in one endowed with bounty will not fall.
And whoever hopes for such merit will not fail
حبابُbubbles دموعيmy tears فيin جفونيmy eyelids طافحٌbrimming over
وربَّand many a حبابbubble فيin مياهwaters سوائحflowing
The bubbles of my tears brim over in my eyelids,
The droplets of my tears in my eyelids are overflowing
and many a bubble floats in flowing waters.
And many droplets are in the waters of torrents
حبستُI halted مطاياthe mounts of الشوقِlonging عندَbeside ضريحهhis tomb
فجددنso they renewed آثارthe traces of الثكالىbereaved women النوائحwailing
I halted the mounts of longing beside his tomb,
I detained the steeds of passion at his shrine
so they renewed the traces of bereaved, wailing women.
So they renewed the traces of sorrowful lamentations
حبائلُthe snares of هذاthis الدهرage عنهfrom him حبسننيthey kept me back
كأنيas though I ماnot صدقتُI believed نصحَthe counsel of النصائحadmonitions
The snares of this age have kept me from him,
The intrigues of this life prevented me from him
as though I had not trusted the counsel of admonitions.
As if I never heeded the advice of advisers
