    A longing like a fire raised upon a mountain,

    blazing among the boughs of wild lote and acacia trees.

    I wrap it within my ribs, while it burns them,

    until it pares me down—though I am no pen.

    Who will buy me with glad tidings and own me

    as a slave, when my eye beholds the sanctuary?

    فليسَ ذا قدم من ليس ذا قدم

    Leave my safekeeping to the Beloved, and bear my last breath;

    for he has no standing who has no footing.

    you have dwelt beside the best one sent to the nations.

    You have beheld the Garden of Paradise at close quarters,

    where revelation, verses, and wisdom descended.

    For her we shall surely leave our homelands empty,

    and surely cross the desert toward her in the darkness.

    Our riding camels carry the burdens of sin, heavily laden,

    to where the sins of Arabs and non-Arabs are laid down.

    Our sins, O Messenger of God, have grown many,

    and we have come to you: ask forgiveness for a sinner.

    فقد مضى العُمر في ذنب وفي ندم

    A sin is followed, whenever it recurs, by remorse;

    for life has passed in sin and in remorse.

    ولو صدقنا البكا شبنا دماً بدم

    We weep, then the world distracts us and makes us laugh;

    and had our weeping been sincere, we would have mingled blood with blood.

    O caravan of Egypt, go slowly, so there may catch up with you

    Maghribi folk—meat upon a butcher's block.

    لم يلق مولاه قد ناداه في النسم

    Among them is a little servant; the pale camels drive his sigh onward;

    he has not met his master, yet has called to him in the breezes.

    He seeks an intercessor before him, one without equal

    in excellence, glory, exalted rank, and generosity.

    That is the Beloved whose intercession is hoped for:

    Muhammad, the best of all God's creation.

    May the God of creation bless him whenever there rises

    the sun, and whenever a fire is raised upon a mountain.
