تمنّيتُ والإنسانُ يُولع بالمنى

تمنّيتُ والإنسانُ يُولع بالمنى

بلوغاً إلى المبعوث في خير أمة

بلوغاً إلى المبعوث في خير أمة

I wished—and humankind is enamored of wishes—

I wished, as people desire wishes,

to reach the one sent among the best of communities.

To reach the one sent among the best nation

تمسّكت في أمري بذمّة حبَّه

تمسّكت في أمري بذمّة حبَّه

وذمةُ خير الخلقِ أكرم ذمّة

وذمةُ خير الخلقِ أكرم ذمّة

In my affairs, I held fast to the protection of love for him;

I held firm in my matter to his covenant of love

and the protection of the best of creation is the noblest protection.

And the covenant of the best of creation is the most noble covenant

تملّكني في حبّه أن حبِّه

تملّكني في حبّه أن حبِّه

أمانٌ لروحي في المعادِ ورمَّة

أمانٌ لروحي في المعادِ ورمَّة

What enthralled me in loving him was that love for him

His love has possessed me, for his love

is safety for my soul at the Resurrection, and for my mortal remains.

Is security for my soul in the return and rest

تمتعتُ في الدنيا بنعمى مديحه

تمتعتُ في الدنيا بنعمى مديحه

فكمْ أزمة قد فرجتها وأسمة

فكمْ أزمة قد فرجتها وأسمة

In this world I enjoyed the blessing of praising him;

I enjoyed in this life the blessing of praising him

how many a crisis I have relieved, and [an unclear word in the text]!

So problems were solved and sorrows assuaged

تماديتُ في ذاكَ المدى بنجائب

تماديتُ في ذاكَ المدى بنجائب

رميتُ إليها فضلَ تلك الأزمة

رميتُ إليها فضلَ تلك الأزمة

I pressed on along that course on noble camels,

I continued excessively in that scope with disasters

tossing them the slack of those reins.

I cast toward it the excellence of those crises

تمائمُ أشعاري مدائحه التي

تمائمُ أشعاري مدائحه التي

صحائفها يدفعن كلَّ ملمة

صحائفها يدفعن كلَّ ملمة

The amulets of my poems are praises of him, whose

The talismans of my poetry are his praises

pages ward off every calamity.

Whose pages drive away every distress

تمامُ مباني المعلوات محمد

تمامُ مباني المعلوات محمد

به كملت تلك المعاليوتمّت

به كملت تلك المعاليوتمّت

Muhammad is the completion of the edifices of lofty merit;

The perfection of the edifices of glory is Muhammad

through him those lofty merits were perfected and completed.

By him those glories were completed and perfected

تمكَّن فيه المجد أيَّ تمكن

تمكَّن فيه المجد أيَّ تمكن

فخصت أياديه الكرام وعمت

فخصت أياديه الكرام وعمت

Glory took firm hold in him—what a firm hold!

In him glory took such possession

So his favors singled out the noble and embraced all.

As honored hands were singled out and spread

تمهّد بالوحي المنزّل أمرُه

تمهّد بالوحي المنزّل أمرُه

وبالسيف إن آذن عن الوحي صمَّت

وبالسيف إن آذن عن الوحي صمَّت

His cause was established by the revelation sent down,

His matter was facilitated by the revelation sent down

and by the sword, if ears turned deaf to revelation.

And by the sword, if silence from revelation nodded

تمَّلأ من فضلِ وطيب خلائق

تمَّلأ من فضلِ وطيب خلائق

ففاحتْ بريّاه البلادُ ونمّت

ففاحتْ بريّاه البلادُ ونمّت

He was filled with excellence and goodness of character,

He was filled with bounty and good character

so the lands breathed his fragrance and made it known.

So that his goodness perfumed the lands and grew
