Muhammad’s family are the precious branches of glory.
The eight branches of glory are the family of Muhammad
They are pure of all defilements.
They are the pure ones, free of all filth

سريعٌswift إذاwhen نادواthey called بهupon him غيرnot رائثtarrying
That Prophet is humankind’s refuge, for he
The finest of humanity is that Prophet, for he
Is swift when they call upon him, never tarrying.
Is swift when called, not slow to respond

My body, a stalk of thumam grass—I hope it will be succored
My body thirsts, I hope for relief
By my God, through nearness to him that relieves longing.
From my God, through nearness to him, quenching longing

The scant pools of my patience are depleted by the heat of my ribs
The patience I show has been cracked by the heat in my ribs
And the burning pangs of urgent longings for him.
And the burning pangs of yearning for him

Precious pearls of tears are the price of loving him;
Eight drops of tears, eight portions of his love
So I gather hopes from luxuriant gardens.
So I reap wishes from the gardens of comfort

تعلقتُI clung فيهاduring them بالحبالto the ropes الرثائثfrayed
Eighty years, save ten, have run their course;
Eighty years plus ten have decrepited me
During them I clung to frayed ropes.
In them I clung to fraying ropes

At twenty I became drunk on the wine of youth.
For twenty years I was drunk on the wine of youth
So alas for me—what drunkenness ravages my reason!
Oh, what drunkenness that brought my mind, roaming astray!

Its remnant is with me, so I am not giving it up,
I will not give it up now, even if poison should kill
Even if the slyest mixer mixed poison into it.
In it, I would trick death the cheater

What I have strung are precious pearls; so grant it
The finest verses are those I composed and recited
A hearing, and do not deem it one of the hindrances.
Hearing them, do not think them mere empty prattle

Eight, and these are two; all of them
Eight and these two make ten, all of them
Are beautiful; so go through them swiftly, without lingering.
Beautiful, so reward them quickly, do not hesitate
