قال الوشاةُ وقد بدتْ في مفرقي

قال الوشاةُ وقد بدتْ في مفرقي

للشيب آياتُ تدلُ على الكبر

للشيب آياتُ تدلُ على الكبر

The slanderers said, as there appeared in the parting of my hair

The gossipers said, when signs of old age appeared on my temples,

Signs of gray hair that point to old age:

"Grey hair indicates your advanced age."

كمْ قد التصابي والشباب قد انقضى

كمْ قد التصابي والشباب قد انقضى

والشيبُ قد عمَّ المفارق وانتشر

والشيبُ قد عمَّ المفارق وانتشر

“How long this youthful dalliance, when youth has already passed,

How time does pass! My youth has gone,

And gray hair has covered the partings and spread?”

And grey hair has covered my temples and spread.

فأجبتُهم إن التصابي للفتى

فأجبتُهم إن التصابي للفتى

كالنّوْر أحلى ما يكون مع السحر

كالنّوْر أحلى ما يكون مع السحر

So I answered them: “For a young man, youthful dalliance

I answered them, "My grey hair makes a young man

Is like blossoms, sweetest in the hour before dawn.”

Even more handsome, like moonlight at dawn."
