لَوif كُنتُمyou were تُنكِرونَyou condemn الغَدرَtreachery قُلتُI said لَكُمto you
ياO آلَhouse of مَروانَMarwan جاريmy protector مِنكُمamong you الحَكَمُal-Hakam
If you condemned treachery, I would say to you:
If you were denying treachery, I would have said to you,
O house of Marwan, my protector among you is al-Hakam.
O clan of Marwan, your rule flows from me,
وَأَتقيكُمand I guard myself against you يَمينَan oath اللَّهِGod ضاحِيَةًopenly declared
عِندَbefore الشُهودِthe witnesses وَقَدand indeed تُوفيare fulfilled بِهاthrough it الذِّمَمُpledges
And I would shield myself from you with an openly sworn oath by God,
And I would take a solemn oath by Allah in the presence of witnesses,
Before witnesses—an oath by which pledges are indeed fulfilled.
Thereby fulfilling the covenants.
لاnot كُنتُI had أَحدَثتُI committed سوءاًa wrong فيunder إِمارَتِكُمyour rule
وَلاnor الَّذيwhat فاتَpassed مِنِّيfrom me قَبلَbefore ينتقمُis avenged
I had committed no wrong under your rule,
Neither have I committed any wrong during your rule,
Nor is what I did before being avenged.
Nor does what preceded me seek vengeance.
نَحنُwe الَّذينَthose who إِذاwhen خِفتُمyou feared مُجَلِّلَةًan overwhelming calamity
قُلتُمyou said لَناto us إِنَّناindeed we مِنكُمof your people لِتَعتَصِمواso you might seek protection
We are those to whom, when you feared an overwhelming calamity,
We are the ones, when you feared a covering darkness,
You said, 'We are of your people,' to seek protection.
You said to us, "Through you we seek protection."
حَتّىuntil إِذاwhen اِنفَرَجَتlifted عَنكُمfrom you دُجُنَّتهاits darkness
صِرتُمyou became كَجَذمٍlike a severed stump فَلاso no إِلٌّcovenant وَلاnor رَحِمُkinship
Until, once its darkness had lifted from you,
Until when its thick clouds parted from you,
You became like a severed stump, with neither covenant nor kinship.
You became like a dried-up root, no god and no kin.
