ماذاwhat يَضيرُكِwould harm you إنْif أتيتُكِI came to you نادماًrepentant
وسكبتُand I poured out دمعَtears العينِof the eye بينbetween يديكِyour hands
What harm would it do you if I came to you remorseful,
What harm would it do you if I came to you repentant,
and poured out the tears of my eyes before you;
and poured out my tears between your hands,
وجمعتُand I gathered أزهارَflowers الحدائقِof the gardens كلّهاall of them
ونثرتُهاand I scattered them عِطراًas perfume علىupon خدّيكِyour cheeks
and gathered all the flowers of the gardens,
and gathered all the flowers of the gardens,
and scattered them as perfume across your cheeks;
and scattered them as perfume upon your cheeks,
وقطفتُand I plucked منfrom شفتيّmy lips أعذبَthe sweetest قُبلةٍkiss
ورسمتُهاand I drew it وشماًas a tattoo علىupon شفتيكِyour lips
and plucked from my lips the sweetest kiss,
and plucked from my lips the sweetest kiss,
and traced it like a tattoo upon your lips?
and traced it as a tattoo upon your lips?
أتُراكِmight you مِنfrom بعدafter القطيعةِthe estrangement ترحميshow mercy
مَنone who هدّهُwore him down الترحالُwandering مِنكِfrom you إليكِto you
Could it be that, after our estrangement, you would pity
Might you, after our estrangement, show mercy
one whom journeying—from you to you—has worn down?
to one worn down by wandering from you to you?
إنيindeed I سئمتُhave grown weary مِنof الظلامِthe darkness حبيبتيmy beloved
واشتقتُand I have longed for نورَthe light الصبحof dawn فيin عينيكِyour eyes
I have grown weary of the darkness, my beloved,
I have grown weary of the darkness, my beloved,
and yearned for the light of morning in your eyes.
and long for dawn's light in your eyes.
وفقدتُand I have lost عصفورَthe sparrow الصباحِof the morning يزورنيvisits me
حتىso that أُحمّلهُI may have it carry السلامَgreetings عليكِto you
I have lost the morning bird that used to visit me,
And I miss the morning sparrow that used to visit me,
so I could entrust it with my greeting to you.
so I could have it carry greetings to you.
واللهِby God لنwill not تهناbe pleasant الحياةُlife بناظريin my eyes

ياO جنّتيmy paradise حتىuntil أعودَI return إليكِto you
By God, life will hold no sweetness in my eyes,
By God, life will hold no joy in my eyes,
O my paradise, until I return to you.
O my paradise, until I return to you.
