والليلُand the night مِنfrom بعدِafter الغيابِthe absence طويلُlong
The soul is thirsty, and the heart is ailing.
My soul is thirsty and my heart is frail
And the night is long in his absence.
And the night after absence is so long
أينَwhere الذيthe one who زرعَplanted الأمانَsafety بداخليwithin me
فالخوفُfor fear فيin عُمقِthe depth of الفؤادِthe heart نزيلُa lodger
Where is the one who planted a sense of safety within me?
Where is the one who planted security within me
For fear is a lodger in the depths of the heart.
For fear dwells deep in the heart's expanse
ياoh ليتهُif only he يحنوshows tenderness ولوand even if only برسالةٍwith a message
علّperhaps المخاوفَthe fears تنجليlift وتزولُand vanish
Oh, if only he would show tenderness, even with a message,
Oh if only he would show tenderness even in a message
So that the fears might lift and vanish.
So that worries would clear and fade away
لاdo not تعذلونيreproach me إنّindeed قلبيَmy heart مولعٌenamored
وعلىand upon الوفاءِfaithfulness بطبعهِby its nature مجبولُmolded
Do not reproach me, for my heart is enamored,
Do not blame me, for my heart is enamored
And is, by nature, molded for faithfulness.
And naturally inclined towards loyalty
I will reject as false الأوهامَthe illusions رغمَdespite جنونِهاtheir madness
وبلائهاand their torment، فلَعلّهُfor perhaps he مشغـولُbusy
I will reject the illusions as false, despite their madness
I will deny illusions despite their madness
And their torment—for perhaps he is busy.
And tribulations, perhaps he is preoccupied
وأُصَبّرُand I make patient الشوقَthe longing العنيدstubborn بداخليwithin me
حتىuntil يعودَhe returns، وعذرُهُand his excuse مقبولُaccepted
And I coax the stubborn longing within me to be patient,
And I will patiently endure the stubborn longing within
Until he returns, with his excuse accepted.
Until he returns, his absence excused
