سألتُ رفيقي لماذا أراكَ

تسيرُ وحيدا بِوَجهٍ حزينْ؟

I asked my companion: Why do I see you

I asked my friend, why do I see you

walking alone with a sorrowful face?

Walking alone with a sad face?

كزهرٍ ترنّح فوق الروابي

كزهرٍ ترنّح فوق الروابي

يُقاسي الرياحَ وبردَ السنينْ

يُقاسي الرياحَ وبردَ السنينْ

Like a flower that swayed atop the hills,

Like a flower sighing over the meadows

enduring the winds and the cold of the years.

فقال همومٌ تُحاصِرُ قلبي

فقال همومٌ تُحاصِرُ قلبي

فكيفَ الخلاصُ وقلبي سجينْ؟!

فكيفَ الخلاصُ وقلبي سجينْ؟!

So he said: Worries besiege my heart;

He said, worries besiege my heart

how, then, can I find release while my heart is a prisoner?

So how can I be saved when my heart is a prisoner?!

همَستُ إليهِ: سيُرضيكَ ربي

همَستُ إليهِ: سيُرضيكَ ربي

فكن يا رفيقي مِن الصابرينْ

فكن يا رفيقي مِن الصابرينْ

I whispered to him: My Lord will bring you contentment,

I whispered to him: Your Lord will please you

so be, my companion, among those who are patient.

So my friend, be among the patient

سيمضي الأسى وتزولُ الهموم

سيمضي الأسى وتزولُ الهموم

ويرحلُ عنكَ المساءُ الحزينْ

ويرحلُ عنكَ المساءُ الحزينْ

Sorrow will pass, and worries will vanish,

The sorrow will pass and worries will fade

and the sorrowful evening will depart from you.

And the sad evening will leave you

ففوقَ السماءِ إِلهٌ كريمٌ

ففوقَ السماءِ إِلهٌ كريمٌ

يجيبُ الدعاءَ ولو بعد حينْ

يجيبُ الدعاءَ ولو بعد حينْ

For above the sky is a generous God,

For above the sky is a Kind God

who answers prayer, even after a while.
